Welsh low flying suspended?

Post by Rotörhead » Thu Apr 05, 2012 11:00 am

Sorry if this has already been covered, but this popped up on Facebook this morning...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... skies.html
RAF bosses have suspended low-level training flights over mid-Wales to avoid ruffling the feathers of a pair of nesting ospreys.

The Tactical Training Area in Montgomeryshire near Newtown is one of three sites in Britain where pilots can fly as low as 100ft.

Last summer a pair of ospreys called Monty and Nora – the only mating pair in Wales – hatched a brood of chicks for the first time in a century.

The Ministry of Defence has imposed a 500ft lower limit on aircraft in the area until September to avoid disturbing the birds.

Excuse my ignorence, but does this mean that there will be no really low flying in the whole of wales until Septmeber, for instance the loop.
I have never been to the loop but was thinking of giving it a go this year.

just read the report in full. I think it's refering to the birds that were nesting in the Dyfi valley near Machynlleth which is a good 30 miles west of Newtown :S :S

Hi All,

Been doing some digging, http://www.rspb.org.uk/news/309960-they ... ninth-year" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is near Porthmadog - so it is a 15 miles northwest of the loop & Dollegau - a few jets do fly low down this valley, but it is not as common as the loop!

I hadn't realized that the Ospreys had even arrived in the UK. Thought the SOG at Mildenhall weren't getting them until much later this year and certainly more than one pair!

Steve you are wrong, there are 2 nest 1 in Porthmadog the other near Machynlleth

Exclusion zone should be no more than 2 miles and above 500ft

Meaning this will have 'NO' affect on the Loop :thumb:

And what a great spot the Cross Foxes is to site back with a cup of coffee on the terrace or something stronger (if not driving lol) and just watch the aircraft go by! ;-)

Two weeks ago the loop had 98 movements, so far this week its been a bit quiet, today they had a few Hawks, a Typhoon and a couple of Tornadoes, then a couple more Tornadoes later on in the evening. I'm going next week for 10 days, we are staying at Portmadog so hope to see plenty of Jets plus the ospreys :thumbs:
