Nice report. Where was this CASA, and where did you view it from, please?

Kind regards,

They say once a spotter always a spotter ;) So for the second time this year I departed Bristol on holiday only to find myself landing or departing with an interesting exercise going on!

Thanks to everyone for the lists so far, perhaps I may ask some questions, mainly out of curiosity?

On arrival 14/10 early evening there was a Salvamento Maritimo CN235-300 by the civil terminal and one departed 21/10 while I was waiting for my Jet2 flight. As I had never seen one before were they the same machine and did anyone record the reg? Also on 21/10 there was a Cavok Air An-12 sat on the ramp, again grateful for a reg if anyone can help.

Now on to the good stuff. I took a few scruffy phone pics through the glass on the exceedingly polluted viewing terrace to jog my memory, again this was 21/10 between 1600 and 1900. Portuguese CN235 taxied out and departed. There was a white tailed CN235 in the large hangar facing the civil terminal, would this be the one reported flying during the week? To the left of this hangar as viewed across the runway was a large ramp with a grey C212, which appears to be on the Google maps satellite image, then down behind the Turkish F-16s a grey 212 and a Mirage F1. Are these the reported preserved examples?

There were 3 Portuguese F-16s parked together then a row of hangars then the Greeks and Turks. In front of those hangars were 2 more F-16s, one looks to be a two seater but the pics are not clear enough to make out what country they were from. Any serials for these 5 please? Finally and a total long shot, as we taxied to the end of the runway 2 EF-18s were sat in the shed/hangar/QRA facility, I assume from Ala 46. Are the HAS's in use, one was open and didn't look in the best of nick?

For my next none aviation holiday I will pack some binos so I stand a fighting chance of recording something myself :D If anyone has photos of any of this stuff would love to see them.

TIA

Ian

Ian -

We were there from 17th to 20th and the only Salvamento Maritimo CN-235 we saw was EC-KEK so may be the one you saw.

The Casa 212 behind the Turkish F-16s was coded 46-39 and has been reported as T.12B-58 but we were unable to confirm that. The Mirage F.1 near it is preserved but unable to confirm it was C.14-13 .

The white tailed CN-235 in the hangar was in there when we departed on Friday night - think it may have just appeared to be white but was in fact grey which had faded in the sun. Unable to confirm which one (the windows in the terminal are really dirty so my photo isn't clear) but it wasn't 37-06 as that was elsewhere and eventually towed to the ramp in front of the hangar.

We also saw the 2 F-18's in the Q sheds on departure but being on the wrong side of the plane were unable to confirm which ones.

Hope that helps.

Just to confirm C.16-47 is incorrect for 14-11 (which was a two seater)

Will confirm the correct serial

T.12B-58 (though not read off last week hence the brackets) is behind the operational ramps parked with the F.1CE close to the sea side of the base . Both can be seen easily from the viewing terrace at the airport.

Hi all,

second based CN235 in the SAR hangar was read as T.19B-08/D4-04 on 18/10.
QRA shed left contained (C.15-77)/46-05 the whole period I was there. QRA shed right side unable to ID due to terrain.

Hope it helps someone out,

Hi Ian,
Spent the first week of the exercise at Gando so these are my comments
It would have been EC-KEK
A white Casa was in the hangar the whole week I was there but never read it.
Left hand QRA shed housed 46-05, right hand shed was not read off.
The C.212 is in the logs previous to this, read of a few times as it flew.
The only F.16's up until the 20th were 4 Greek and 3 Turkish, serials listed earlier.
Mike

Many thanks for this Dave.
I'm not there until March next year so I hope that the CASA, and the Mirage, weren't out on the ramp only for a short while in order to make room in museum hangar during the exercise.

Freeman,

The Mirage and the CASA have been in the same positions for at least a couple of years. I'm not sure they are even ON the ramp, I think they are probably beyond it, but the topography of that bit of the base is difficult to figure out from the terminal side.

Thanks Stuart. it's 11 years since I was last out there, so I've to catch up on a couple of airframes.

Thanks again to all those that posted reports. A couple more sightings to add from me. I left on Saturday evening & noted from in the terminal before departure an addition based Hornet front half visable in an open hangar (C.15-94) 46-22, & read the preserved F-27MPA D.2-02 also inside a hangar.

Best of luck to anyone out there for week 2!

A Portuguese AF press release shows 2 special tail F-16s on the ramp at Gando, dated 23 Oct, 15105 and 15106.
