Re: Queens birthday Flypast
Thanks for your help. That route would take them South West of Sleaford. The issue is looking at the NOTAM this time they are not using the area from Southwold to Wisbech and will be coming inland from the Wash area. If they head to Spalding area from the Wash then that leaves a tight right turn to Cranwell. If they go straight from the Wash area then that would put them North East of Sleaford instead.plmc135 wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 3:33 pmFrom watching the practice from home in South Lincs, it has never been a straight line flight. The normal assembly point is Southwold on the Norfolk coast then towards Wisbech/Spalding where the shallow right turn takes place.
For the practice any helicopters join the entourage from the West and what should be a formation can be represented by a single aircraft, a role regularly performed by Cranwell King Airs in the past.
You also need to keep a close eye on the weather. Aircraft start to assemble over the North Sea quite a long time before the trail is established. If there are no aircraft assembling it is the sign that it is a no go that day.
To track aircraft assembling would they show up on ADSB exchange or FR24
So far the forecast for tomorrow is light rain showers and a "fresh breeze" with a higher possibility of rain at 2pm would they be a go or no-go.

I know the county boundary with Suffolk has changed overtime but I don't think Souhwold has ever been on the Norfolk coast...plmc135 wrote: ↑Sun May 22, 2022 3:33 pmFrom watching the practice from home in South Lincs, it has never been a straight line flight. Isn't the formation routing from Southwold to Marham, i.e. "inland" of the Wash area??Chaos wrote: ↑Mon May 23, 2022 8:45 amThanks for your help. That route would take them South West of Sleaford. Not acording to the new NOTAM that section is not included - see here https://www.facebook.com/groups/Conings ... 771779777/
Re: Queens birthday Flypast
Does anyone have a time over Cranwell?
From reading the NOTAM I'm thinking its 13:00 or maybe 13.15L?

Re: Queens birthday Flypast
If things run as usual…….
First aircraft acting as the ‘leader’ used to be a C17 probably due to the fact that it has good fuel capacity and it was usually on station about 20 to 30 mins before things kicked off. Probably doing a weather check.
I can’t remember the frequency but the call sign was Madras IIRC.
Last on scene just as the whole flock departed was usually the Red Arrows.
The map linked above for the practice won’t be the same as the flypast in case anyone is new to this. The flypast route will be more Southwold/Ipswich based, in recent years I believe they’ve been OTT Aldeburgh.
Happy viewing.

Re: Queens birthday Flypast
MADRAS would have been a Voyager, not a C-17 (often callsign BLACKCAT or GIANT in the past?)

You could well be right. Although I can’t remember a Blackcat or Giant call sign.
Sometimes I’d watch it, sometimes I’d listen if I couldn’t get the time off. One year I waited until the first signs of action then proceeded at Warp Factor 2 to Southwold on the bike. I remember hoofing down the Kessingland Bypass and have multiple Tornados whizzing past at quite a low height. Excellent.
As I said though. It’s usually a big transport acting as leader. That gives the clue that it’s happening.
Drive carefully folks.

Re: Queens birthday Flypast
Gyvespa. For a huge fee, I could give you my Sister-in-law's 'phone number, and she could give you the info 'cos she lives in Southwold.

Re: Queens birthday Flypast
Obviously a Billionairess.
Millionaires can only afford Beach Huts in Southwold :-)

Re: Queens birthday Flypast
A quick and easy search on the net confirms the time as 1300 over Buck House. Practice normally runs to the same times.
Re: Queens birthday Flypast
Correct. C17 usually calls BLACKCAT on QBF duty and agree MADRAS would be the voyager.

What constitutes bad weather for the 1st attempt to be scrubbed to another day. The forecast for tomorrow is not great and the 26th and 27th are much better
