Guys

If it carries on they will shut it all they like they did Mildenhall. The local groups usually follows the rules it the people who come far and wide who don’t understand the rules, it amazes me the amount of people who come from centre parks then visit lakenheath. :grr:

I live and work very local and it’s nice to see the spotters and the enjoyment they get looking at the aircraft (children and adults).

I just hope no one gets injured or killed one day on 1065.

Actually Ian I've been coming from far and wide for the last 30+ years  , but I know exactly what you mean ;), casual passers by, who have no common sense when it comes to parking their cars (usually with a mob of youngsters in the back). Or it's the irresponsible "entitled" minority who don't give a toss about their actions, with no regard for anyone else but their own personal gratification. I guess it's the times we're living in. Maybe eventually when the novelty wears off, this all will fizzle out when (if ?) the pandemic ends, who knows....

I remember the old Mildenhall one and also remember it going. I'm still alive and not suffering any after effects.
Just as a side note to the discussion, can I ask, and get an answer to:P where the Mildenhall viewing area was situated?

Was originally north side of the base, just off the A1101 west of the present main entrance, just as you enter the 30 mph limit for Beck Row. Then it moved down towards the roundabout east of the main entrance.

Remember it well Trev. Slept in the car there many weekends. :thumb:

Also convenient on Air Fete days as they would pull open a section of its fencing for the entrance.

Car! We used to walk from the bus stop in Mildenhall opposite the church in the town to that sandy carpark on the bend at Mildenhall

I did have the Monty python sketch in mind when I said Car!

And then we/I would walk back to the village to catch the national bus to Victoria followed by a train home - must have been mad!

But back on parking - it is futile to worry about something you cannot control. Although I would say that I reckon most if not all people who park on the A1065 verge ( not illegal , but I don't go there because it doesn't look safe and you could ground your car) are photographers as most casual tourists with kids go to the other side because they don't care which side of the sun they are on plus there is a burger van.

If it is going to be busy I don't bother trying to park in the forest entrance as for example when the AV were in, people had arrived by 5am! Another exclamation mark I can't compete with that.

The problem of stupid parking and poor fenceline behaviour is worse than its ever been. It will end up with spotting locations closing down, notjust at the Heath. Some of the forest entrance parking is beyond madness, done by spotters who should know better.

Just my input to the debate,if the A1065 between Brandon and Mildenhall is considered so dangerous if cars are parked a way off the road in the forest entrance, surley the whole stretch is dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians and maybe Suffolk council could invest in joining the national cycling network and build a cycle track to one side of it.

Investing with what, shirt buttons? Councils have no money.

Yes a few cyclists use the road but most leisure cycsling is done in Thetford Forest between Brandon, Thetford and Elveden (Center Parcs). It is as dangerous a road as any other busy one, because people drive badly on it. A cyclist was hit in recent months needing an ambulance to attend at least. However even if money was available I cannot see it being used that much.

Oh I don't know? A couple of Summers ago when the Makos were deployed with their F-16's from Florida, I anticipated that with every man and his dog being there, space would be at a premium. So we actually set off early one evening, drove none stop through the night and duly arrived at the Forrest Gates for around 1am (ish), only to find three cars already parked there (loads of zzz's coming from them) :@ . Talk about a Victor Meldrew moment " I doon't believe it!!!! :grr: )"

😷

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the F15E incident. A photographing viewer watched a pair take off. One had a flame showing from the right exhaust after the afterburners were shutdown. He called the switchboard who contacted the tower. A message was passed to the aircraft which returned to base. The news article quoted the Major, the action probably saved my life.
I don't know when this happened but certainly a point in favour of increasing the viewing area and building one at the other end
