Ollie, irrespective of what happened here, I suggest you Google birdstrike damage in images, you'd be surprised what hitting a gull at 500+ miles per hour will do to an aircraft. It can be catastrophic

there has been red kites operating in the area near the threshold for runway 27. Well at least that is tower said on Thursday lol. I should imagine they could cause some damage lol

Looks like BAF F-16 FA-101 is heading back from Belgium as BAF291, it departed home at around 18.30 yesterday and is currently over the Channel.

Our take on RIAT this year,top quality flying by all pilots. The Finnish Hornet pilot was the best dont know how the wings stayed on after that performance. Great day out only downside took us over 2 hours to get out the Blue zone on the Saturday. The other years we have attended we where out in 20 minutes.

Must admit I arrived a bit late. Came in to car park as Belgian F-16s started. Parked in G1/G2 on the airfield. Camera combo wasn't the best because decided to leave the big lens at home. We were lucky with the weather, yay. Left about 7pm . out in no time really. Overall, seen better RIATS but for display prizes it was a toss up between the USAF F16 and the Finnish F-18. For me probably the Finnish F18. 747-Reds flypast was spot on. Had good company. Day went to quick.
Thats it in a nutshell for Saturday. Other than a huge thanks to everyone who made it what it was.

Get ready for next year now.

Also, it's a pretty odd birdstrike that damages the trailing edge of the tail.... Either the bird was at Mach 0.8, or the Viper was flying backwards....?

I getting slated for this everywhere else but I had the scanner on and the Viper pilot clearly said 'aircraft damaged by accidental deployment of tail hook'.
I'm guessing from the pics I've seen it turned out to be something different but that was what was reported at the time.

Well, first time at RIAT for myself and my family and can only say it was an incredible weekend. I was going to say I’m disappointed that the NATO flypast didn’t include everything planned as I wanted to see a Tornado fly again but in all honesty I’m really not disappointed. Everything was brilliant imo, I expected it to be good but it massively exceeded all expectations and all of the air crew we spoke to were great guys and really welcoming.

I may have had a different view if I’d have drove given the parking situation but we stayed at a local campsite and had no issues getting in and out of the event.

Whilst I don’t have experience of previous RIAT’s to compare against I will say that I’ll have no hesitation in booking tickets for next year!

I heared the same on my scanner...most definately said damage was caused by "the hook"...I can only guess he means the emergency arrester hook?
