Canon 300mm Prime

Post by LTFT5 » Wed Oct 28, 2009 8:36 pm

Hi to all,

Iam looking to purchase a prime lens in the 300mm range and wonder if any members use the Canon EF 300mm F4L IS USM. Usual questions really, is it a good lens ie sharp, quick to focus, also what is the quality like with a 1.4 or 2.0 x converter. Can any members recommend an alternative ie Sigma or Tamron in the same price bracket (£1400) must be a canon fit.

Andy,

''is it a good lens ie sharp, quick to focus'' oh hell yes, i love this lens and would only change it for a f2.8 if i had the money

As for converters it will only work with the 1.4x and the quality is still great but the auto focus does slow down, if you stick a 2.0x converter on it will be manual focusing only.

You'll enjoy using the 300mm F4 Andy. I use one on my 40D for Lowflying photography and its a cracking lens ,nice and light with integral hood and super optics .I still want an F2.8 though :'( ..............

The 300mm/4 IS lens was one of the best I ever had and I have already regretted selling it. The picture was taken with the 300/4 IS lens and just reduced in size for a German photography forum board. Since I'm now lacking enough "reach" (am stuck with the 70-200 and a 1.4 TC) I'm already thinking about buying another EF 300/4 IS again, such a fantastic lens it was.

Cheers
