Reds and Typhoon at Liverpool John Lennon Airport 7th August

Post by JackWills28 » Sun Aug 14, 2016 5:20 pm

Afternoon all,

As some of you will be aware, last Sunday was the first day of the oldest airshow in the UK, Blackpool. Despite having gone last year, the thought of a sub-par flying display and the horrendous traffic leaving the show made it easy enough for myself and the brother to skip this year's event. What did emanate from the airshow though was the news that the Typhoon, Red Arrows and the BBMF would be using Liverpool John Lennon as a base for their displays. Regrettably, due to the higher than normal winds (well, normal for August), the BBMF could not display.

About 10 minutes after we turned up, the Typhoon began to taxy out for his departure, and then having done so and completed his display, returned to LPL 45 minutes later. Bit of a wait then, but was worth it as right on cue at 15:45 the Reds rose from behind the crest of the taxiway at LPL and departed, returning a short time later with a left-right break, which was the first time myself and Tom had seen that performed this year.

On with the photos then. One thing to note however, and anyone who has done photos at LPL will know, is that you face the sun at the 27 end, so that did not help with the images too much (had worse at LN with the blown highlights all day in January). The ever shifting light was also a problem, not had the light change that much so quickly for quite some time.

At 1340, the light is absolutely perfect for runway 27, one has to wonder why you didn't go to the end of Oglet Lane and shoot over/through the fence there?

To be honest, I knew what type of shots I wanted to get, and so I set up where I was for them, however I would have to disagree with you on the light, it was straight down the runway facing us.

I've only ever been there once though, so I guess I will have to go back and try it! :thumb:

Cheers for the words chaps!

Jack.

Love the Typhoon with a Ryanair taxiing behind. Can't imagine that has happened very often. :thumb:

Nice shots.

Did well to get all the Reds inside one pic.

Was a bit of an issue with the haze meaning they had to be quite close to get a sharp shot. Just about pulled it off in time!

Thanks for the kind words.

Jack.
