More Arizona Gems *Updated*

Post by Jazz » Sat Jan 16, 2016 2:37 pm

Continuing the Arizona trip... Leaving the Tucson area, many other airfields were visited on the way up to Phoenix, and on via Prescott to the museum at Valle. After Kingman, the final shots here were taken at Quartzsite (on the way to Yuma). Of course, there is so much to see in this area, with the following shots of ex/retired mil along the way a taste of some more of Arizona's gems...

Hi Kevin, very nice. Photo 3 I take it was taken at Gosshawk, Casa Grande. The last time I saw it was in June '94 approx. 60nms SW of Goose Bay! Rare XF-3 recce variant (you can see one of the camera ports just forward of where the roundel was) of the Boston/Havoc serial 39-741. Enjoy Bahrain Airshow, regards Taff

KC-97G 53-0317 c/n 17099 was disassembled at the Stockton Airport in 2001 by Scroggins Aviation. The tail, wings, landing gear, and engines were salvaged for the potential restoration of B-50A Superfortress 46-0010 Lucky Lady II. The fuselage of Lucky Lady II is displayed at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California. Most of the components of KC-97G 53-0317 are stored at the Planes of Fame Museum East at the Valle-Williams Airport in Arizona.

Glad you caught her as well, Jon! I missed a take off shot at Yuma last year, but then made up for it with this at the El Centro show :D

A few additional shots to add to this group, as well as an update on the two Connies, for those that missed the news and videos...

Firstly, Columbine II made it from Avra Valley, AZ to Bridgewater, VA on 23rd March, via a stop at the Mid America Flight Museum at Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Dynamic Aviation will now complete a total restoration of the aircraft. Two videos of the arrival at her new home, with the number two poppin' and smokin'...

Prior to this, Bataan had finally got away from Valle, AZ to Chino, CA on 14th January. Again, now for complete restoration prior to going to her new owner, Lewis Air Legends (also the owners of P-38F 'Glacier Girl'). Video of Bataan arriving at Chino... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCpZRF9kzeE

And so, one other stop while in Arizona, was made at Buckeye Municipal Airport, the home of the Lauridsen Aviation Museum. According to a friendly chap here, most of the aircraft are being restored and made airworthy prior to relocating to Glendale Municipal, where a brand new facility is planned. Looks like a long-term project, but good luck to them. The C-119G here (N15501) was used in the 2004 remake of "Flight of the Phoenix", with filming done in Namibia...

I don't suppose you (or any one else) has a confirmed ID for the T33 fuselage In the photo taken a Eloy?

Cheers Graham,
No sorry, i haven't looked into an id on the T-33 as yet.
TBH i didnt even get out of the car for that shot, so never had a closer look!
I guess the id is not that well known then?
