Midnight RAF Spadeadam star trail inc. AAC Apache pair: Tues

Post by catkins » Wed Aug 12, 2015 11:51 am

A late night visit to RAF Spadeadam last night (Tuesday 11 Aug) had two intentions; to try and photograph some star trails on a supposedly clear night, and if possible to watch a bit of AAC Apache Longbow night training. The ideal? To catch both in one photograph!
Early cloud and midges initially made us question our sanity but, as the sun set, so the clouds retreated and temperatures plummeted to reveal a glorious sky full of stars, satellites and occasional flashing aircraft above the western edge of Europe's largest International Dark Sky park.
The first pair of Apache on site used an area too far from our position for their lights to be easily seen in any photographs, but the return of the second pair at midnight also heralded the arrival of low lying fog that blanketed many of the previously used hiding areas for the Apache. So luck brought the Apache up to our slight high spot where one hovered very low close-by.
So in this Live Composite photograph, the nearby red flashing Apache hovers and then rises up to head off left, closely behind followed by its wingman which disappears low into the forest. Ten minutes later they both return to head back to base from left to right. The angled orange lights are high level civilian aircraft. Unfortunately one bright Perseid meteor flew past just out of frame! But otherwise ... the ideal had been achieved, star trail and Apache Longbow in one shot, thanks to the mist!

Catkins,

I love the crisp sharp low fly and airfield shots but I have to say that is one of the best photographic shots I have seen on this forum or others.

I love to track the ISS via the NASA website and you have just inspired me to take it to the next level!

Well done mate

Good to read the story behind it.
Great when a plan comes together, well executed.
Critically observing Pension regulatory activity... :D

Thank you as always, one and all, for your kind comments, really appreciated .... especially in times of aviation drought up north, LoL! Without going out into the wilds we get nothing, but even in going out so much relies on the combination of knowledge/experience, planning and luck - I think in this shot, all three came together in such a satisfying way!
Thanks again.
Chris

Just a little update:
The following night I headed up to Otterburn Ranges to try to photograph the AAC Apache Longbow at their FARP. A wonderful low flyover of the three Apache in the dark seemed to be the start of a night of great potential. Unfortunately though it became a night of car headlights, fuel truck lights (and they are very well lit), and helicopter nightlights affecting the various long exposure images that I took! But it was still a great learning curve from which a bit has been learnt for future night trail attempts ... never work near vehicles with lights, for one!
In this photo, the Apache pair are returning to their FARP after a sortie over Spadeadam EW Range. While one came in to land the other rotated over the area a few times before coming in to land. The Live Composite view was looking great on the back of the camera, with the red light trail showing the Apache coming down to a low hover before landing. I thought I'd let it keep recording so that I could catch a good star trail too, but unfortunately as the Apache taxied to its refuelling spot, on came their night light (the only one of the three to use it) to totally burn out the centre of the photo! Oh well, some nights luck works, some nights not!

Knowing how much I admire your low level imagery and perseverance in 'getting the shot', I really appreciate your comment Walter, thanks,
Chris

Well done you for going out to get such sots in the first place.

On the first photo, your tripod may have moved very slightly as the stars have a slight tick at one end. It's infuriating when that happens.

Anyway, well done once again.

Thanks again for the great comments - it's appreciated.
Wallace, yes you're right! We had been at this spot for the Apaches' first sortie but they had been working further south on the range. So we headed closer to that area with the expectation of a repeat for the later session. However, incoming cold weather meant that thick fog started to fill the lower lying areas that they had been using, so they had to head north where we'd been before! So a quick dash back meant we arrived as they were in a great, relatively close and low area; so it was a very quick set up, almost an initial grab shot before the lead Apache rose and moved off. The characteristic tick is from the initial exposure before the Live Composite adds in the following shots, and probably results from the quick set up and not having the remote lead attached i.e. probably me pressing the shutter button! But this was very much a one off opportunity for a very unusual shot, with luck playing its part along with some experience & planning helping!
Thanks, Chris
