Tyndall AFB: Phancon 2014 Day 2

Post by Jazz » Fri Nov 14, 2014 10:18 pm

Back to the DroneWay twice today, followed by a visit to the 82nd ATRS ramp at the main base...

Flying chase for the afternoon drone mission today was this pre-modified former 119thFS/177thFW New Jersey ANG F-16C 85-1562/AC, still in unit markings along with the AMARG code, but now operated by the 82ndATRS. Flown by Col. Matt “Course” LaCourse, tragically he was killed 15 days later when flying an F-16 on a similar mission, after the aircraft crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. RIP

Big crop on these next two... A pair of USMC F-35B's inbound, were 168311/VM-10 and this, 168839/VM-00 (previously coded VM-13), both operated by VMFAT-501 'Warlords' at MCAS Beaufort. Then, the conclusion of the afternoon drone mission as an (i think) BQM-167 falls into the Gulf, followed by the return of the QF-4, which taxied right in for us...

With Phancon 2014 coming to an end, a group hug... i'm the one with the cap on! Picture credit to Peter Kuntz.
Another group shot, with the no less than 17 former Rhino drivers with us, including 'Mig-killer' 1Lt Joe Latham (red shirt, blue cap)...

Finally, on to the 82nd ATRS facility and ramp at the main base. Restrictions on the ramp here meant only the 82nd's aircraft could be photographed, though our guides were happy for some departing Singapore AF F-16's of the 425thFS at Luke AFB to be shot as well, which were among several visiting units on detatchment at the time for weapons training. As the 82nd transition to the QF-16, several 'new' pre-modified aircraft were present with the unit, still in their former unit markings...

Interesting stuff Kev, I still can't believe that they're now onto F16's. Looks like quite an event.

Excellent use of superb facilities, a fine crop of images from the transition period to QF-16's. Did anyone discuss the ultimate fate of the 'TD' showcase aircraft? I assume as they're converted at serious expense (compared to fly-by-wire QF-16)they will be the 'phinal' Nullo flights....that will be a double sad day! :( :(

Thanks for the comments :thumb:
Yes, it was indicated that two QF-4's "hopefully those in 'heritage' schemes" would move down to Holloman, so hopefully that happens.

I love how grubby and purposeful those Phantoms look!

But 1015 for lunch?!

Yes, retired at Tyndall in the next few months, then the very last finish at Holloman in 2016 around Q3.

Re: Tyndall AFB: Phancon 2014 Day 2 (With bonus QF-4 shots)

Just looking back at a few other QF-4 shots over the past few years at US shows, the following were taken at Rockford, Langley and Barksdale. Of these, 71-0237 now has some orange dayglo paint, and was at Tyndall last month, along with 74-0643. 74-1638 wasn't seen but is apparently still current, so based at Holloman?

Great shots. Very envious.

Has anyone kept tabs on the serials and AF numbers of the QF-4s over the last few years? I lost track after the bemuse of BAR.

Thanks,

Alan.
