Which ATC Squadron are/were you a member of?
Re: Which ATC Squadron are/were you a member of?
1211 detached flight - Swadlincote. 78 to 83 got to Staff cadet level (yellow shoulder braid ). still can do the funny turn with the Tee and The Vee etc etc.
i remember camps at Binbrook and Newton.
used to love shooting the old 303 rifles and represented the squadron at Proteus, but didn't win or anything like that.
proudest moment was always parade on remembrance Sunday's to be honest, mixing with old soldiers etc was always moving and an honour.

I've just aged out from being a Cadet Flight Sergeant at 1990(Ellon) Sqn, Aberdeen and North East Scotland wing.
Well I say just I mean 10Sept was my 20th!
Been there since Dec 2003, and that feels a long way away!!
Currently a CI at the same Sqn, but I'll be looking to be going back into uniform within the next 12months, and moving sqns too!

323 Sqn (Epsom and Ewell). It was one of the bigger squadrons in Surrey wing at the time and we usually had about 35-40 cadets in 3 flights over the 5 (ish) years i was there (1995-2000 i think?), i think at one point we had around 60 on the books. We had a good team of officers and C.I.'s and as we were based in the local T.A. center we had access to their shooting range and parade square that could be used for various things. As it was a big squadron we had to take things like flying Bulldogs at Benson or Gliding at Kenley in turns.
I used to love going to the Wing shoots at Perbright as not many people wanted to go and we would get hundreds of rounds each
and sometimes it would be arranged so that there would be a GPMG or a Sniper rifle (i forget the name now) for us to have a go with. Sadly i did'nt go on the Annual RAF Camps as only two/three people per squadron could go and i always seemed to miss out. I did go on the squadron annual Camp each year to places like St. Martins plain (SMP) near Folkstone and Perbright which i have some fond memories of. I was about the only one interested in going to aircraft recc and modeling competions though and usually had to convince a couple of people to come with me so we could at least make up the 3 cadet entry minimum entry team. We had Air Nav lessons by a former Cadet who was at the time a current B.A. 747 Captain and we also had a C.I. that was an Amature ham Op. that tought us Radio. We had a big Band that kept winning the Wing Band comps and a Drill Squad that i was in that were very good, i used to love a bit of Spin drill with the old Enfield 303's.
Most of the current Adult team there now were fellow Cadets/NCO's at the time and if my life permitted it i would probably get involved again in some way. I had some awsome times there and some that times i would rather forget which is partly why i didn't join up to the RAF.

73 Squadron (Huntingdon), which met at RAF Brampton, from 1976-1979 IIRC. Flights in Chipmunks and the UAS's Auster. Camps at Wyton and the best one was at RAF Catterick when the RAF Regiment was there. We had one exercise on one of the local moors having to make sure we didn't get run over by Chieftains - which you could hear growling ominously in the distance. The best though was a night exercise against the RAF Regiment part of which was in and amongst Cattericks fire dump. We had strict warnings not to pinch anything off of the aircraft (one was a Victor I think) but we all did and then on the last day the officers made us get out of our tents and did a search for any contriband. Needless to say, bits of panels, knobs and switches all came flying out of the tents!
My Flight Sergeant (VR) was Bob Elliott who was Librarian at the Shuttleworth Collection at the time. I think Bob knew who were the more enthusiastic air-minded cadets and took them under his wing and used to take us down to Old Warden to help on the aircraft. Top fella though I believe now deceased, I remember him often.

Oh go on then,
Along with Antony (Galaxy100) I was a member of 1053 Armthorpe Squadron but I had to move to the South country for a job so I decided to pack in as I couldn't make it back for the parade nights.
I absoloutely loved every minute of my time with the ATC, the highlights being standing on the ramp of a Hercules at around 3000ft above the River Humber, then returning to Doncaster Airport (Ex RAF Finningley) and doing a low level pass down the runway. Another highlight would be doing 9 touch and go's in an E3 from Waddington at Kinloss, holding at 3000ft (If I remember correctly) above the sea at bank angles never experienced before in such a big aircraft!
I also did my 12 hour PPL flying scholarship up at Tayside Aviation, Dundee which was another 'best bit'!

1034 Squadron (Tolworth)
First camp Binbrook 1975 arrived on the day of the show
. On the Monday morning spent the morning litter picking the airfield and being buzzed by highly amused Lightning pilots
1976 Malta and my first helicoptor flight in you guessed it in Gazelle XX377. This was written off sometime after.
1977 Linton-on Ouse. Jet Provost central.
Also in 1977 got my A&B gliding certificate at Kenley soloing in K.C. MK.3 WT875
Left in 1978 and lost touch with most of the other cadets.
Binbrook got me started collecting aircraft serials and I still do !

Flights in chippie's,and Whirlwind, Argosy out of thorney island, and as for the Parade on Queens route into 25 Aniversary of transport command (Thorney Island), well its the only time I've heard the order "Triple time march"
Saw coal being Whitewashed, turned me off of joining up.
