Thanks for sorting that.
Re: F-35 coming to RIAT / Farnborough
The Venom/Vampire has a tendency to soften rhe Tarmac if it sits still for too long, due to the low position and downward angle of the tailpipe!

Perhaps you should do some research yourself before spouting rubbish. A Harrier was quite capable of melting a runway - it's why they rarely did repeated vertical landings away from home plate, rolling vertical landings were much more common. Airshow vertical landings were done at minimum weights to minimise the risk of runway damage. When forward deployed, they would lay out re-inforced matting if vertical landing was required.reaper62 wrote:God I dread to think what it'll do to our poor aircraft carriers then...
I can't beleive (well actually maybe I can) the government would commit to such a costly programme without evaluating the risks of this sort of thing. If Fairford cant handle a vertical take off then there's no hope for anywhere else around here either, why would we invest so heavily into a vtol aircraft if we can't accomodate them in that configurataion?
Seems crazy to me, totally crazy. I cant understand why an F35 would melt a runway when nothing else could? Doesnt add up
The Harriers had special pads built at Yeovilton, Wittering and Cottesmore so that they didn't damage the runways due to repeated vertical landings - vertical take offs were very rare. New pads are being built at Marham for the JSF, and the QE class carriers are equipped with (IIRC) two suitable landing pads. Other deckspace can be used in an emergency. The JSF is twice the weight of the heaviest Harrier, so simple physics tells you it'll produce twice the downward thrust in the hover.
So it's all in hand - as things stand the only thing a JSF won't be able to do that Harriers did is airshow vertical landings - unless the matting is laid out. Do you really think that airshow performance should have been a major factor in JSF design?

Would be one of the test pilots that would be doing the demo flights. Therefore would be most likely be flying a wide variety of types over a short period and not just different marks of the Dave. And was it not mentioned elsewhere in this thread that its the same core engine?Thunder wrote:Don't think it would be as easy as that, the F-35B has a totally different engine therefor different flight characteristics and handling, surely?
And a plea to the US authorities! If they pass inspections, just send us over the 3 Marines machines as we have years to miss out on the UK ones!

Arabest,
Geoff.

That's no great achievement. I've known the sun to melt tarmac before.Sylar wrote:The Venom/Vampire has a tendency to soften rhe Tarmac if it sits still for too long, due to the low position and downward angle of the tailpipe!

Well the sun is a billion degrees, but far away, which is good.

Re: F-35 coming to RIAT / Farnborough
What is the point of vertical landing then if it can't land on a runway surface and forces would need to lay a special mat in the field? Will it land on the carrier vertically harrier style, or rolling like a US carrier? Seems like perhaps we would've been better off with a regular carrier version although the mods for a catapult were too expensive!
Doh!

Or to be nearer to a real figure, around 6,000 degrees Celsius at the surface and 15.7 million at the core. Yes I now you were generalising, albeit wildly, but I couldn't resist the correctionSylar wrote:Well the sun is a billion degrees, but far away, which is good.

Harrier ; Anytime, anyhere, any place, ANY SURFACE.
A remakeable beast is the Harrier.
It take off close to the barrier.
It carries enough store to start several wars.
From a wood, beach or a carrier.

..... Know is spelt with a 'K' at the start, 'now' means "at this point in time", just letting you know!Nighthawke wrote:Or to be nearer to a real figure, around 6,000 degrees Celsius at the surface and 15.7 million at the core. The man knows the inner temperature of the sun, I'm pretty sure he understands the difference between "now" & "know". Simply a typo - give the guy a break!nigelblake wrote:..... Oh dear oh dear. I see RIAT have rolled out a full-scale mock-up F-35 into the static area! I suppose that might keep the general public happy!

I've heard from a bloke who works on the security at Lockheed Martin that it will be in the UK by Thursday.
Now don't shoot the messenger 'cause I'm as skeptical as everybody else where the F-35 is concerned!

Re: F-35 coming to RIAT / Farnborough
There does seem to be comments going around that they have been green lit and will be departing tomorrow once the RAF F-35B has joined the USMC one's.
I am going to hold off celebrating until I see a pic/vid of them landing at Fairford as plenty can still happen to prevent them arriving.
