Tamiya 1/48 F-15C Eagle - Me and my lad!

Post by steve149c » Sat Dec 21, 2013 7:33 pm

So here we go again, I bought this kit off a fellow member with a few others. The point of this build is to introduce my 6 year old son to modelling, and as Tamiya kits go together well I chose this one. So Ryan has been helping with cutting off sprues, light sanding, gluing, decals and generally enjoying himself. So far 24 hours into the best build of my life - all he wants to do is model!

Ok back to the build. Box shots

Image

And the sprues

Image

Image

Image

Nice transfers too

Image

And then the build is on!

Basic pit

Image

Air intakes in supersonic position

Image

Air intakes fitted

Image

Ryan painting the pilot

Image

Fuselage together with minimum of fuss

Image

The finished pilot, I helped with the helmet and visor

Image

One wing on

Image

And the other

Image

Then the fins and elevators, abit of putty around the nose seams

Image

So now it will sit overnight to dry, and show you some more tomorrow!

Cheers

A chip off the old block

I will guess that this build will give you more real pleasure than any previous one ;)

Nice one, mate

Thanks Guys - well as you might have guessed from the post above, Ryan loved his pilot 'Maverick' (yes he is educated and watches Top Gun) - stuck in the aircraft as he is very proud of him. So a Tamiya Navy pilot is in instead.

First up the cockpit done, no surface detail, all transfers

Image

This is rather good for an out the box, and is speeding along. Fuel tanks done, second pilot coming along

Image

All the body sanding is now done, pilot complete and canopy masked up

Image

And the weapon assembly done, painted gloss white and now just putting the bands on

Image

So we will leave the canopy dry overnight and then start spraying tomorrow! Not bad for 48 hours work

Great father/son project.

Can`t wait for mine to get beyond the `throwing things` stage so I can start them off.

It gets even better when you are the Grandad, love half term so we can do the bases.

Thanks guys - it's an amazing build and I'm surprised how much Ryan has picked up from watching me! Ryan busy in the spray booth doing the Vallejo primer

Image

All primed up

Image

But it has shown a few areas that need refilling and sanding

Image

I left the primer dry for 6 hours and then put putty on to fill the gaps. Will leave until tomorrow now

Cheers again

Thanks guys, lol yes Ryan has Sqn Ldr tabs from a friend who was a SAR Seaking pilot

So by 0900 this morning we have the preshade splatter on, Ryan needed a little help, so I held his hand to guide him. Again not worried it is uneven as this will help with the tonal differences in the top coat later.

Image

And the missiles all done with Blue tips (Ryan remembered the Eagles through the loop we saw had blue on their bombs)

Image

And then onto the exhaust cans, with a little tutorial on how I do it (just for you Pat). They are basic but workable

Image

Inner side all painted with Matt black and now drying

Image

Cheers guys, more later

So today's small update, the inner workings of the exhaust cans were drybrushed with Vallejo Steel

Image

And a Mixture of Tamiya XF-19 and White XF-2 (1:2) gave the grey for the F-15C. Preshading still showing through slightly

Image

Image

Will try and get the other darker grey on tomorrow using white tac, unless anything else gets in the way, lol

Cheers

So onto the masking! A mixture of tape and white tack

Image

And the end result, with subtle tonal changes

Image

Paint - light grey is tamiya XF-19 and White XF-2, 2 white:1 grey
Darker grey is Tamiya XF66 and white XF2, 3 white to 1 grey

Next up is to seal her in Klear. Ryan is really pleased - when the masking came off his words were
"dad, that looks Awesome!"

Cheers

Steve

So I realised I hadn't masked up and sprayed the exhausts!

All done with Tamiya X10 (Gun metal), X31 (Titanium) and X33 (Metallic brown)

Klear coat applied, exhaust cans are not fitted yet
