Corris Corner, Mach Loop, 8th August 2013

Post by JackWills28 » Sat Aug 10, 2013 1:36 pm

Afternoon all. :)

Travelled down to the Loop with TomTwin and Rob for the first time since last August, and had a great day. All started at 8:45 when we were in position at Corris Corner, and full of trepidation for the day ahead. 2 hours later, nothing had happened, and fears of a blank day started to creep in! However, that was quickly kicked into touch when the area went bat crazy for around 2 minutes, with a 100 Sqn Hawk T1A, a Typhoon that exited the Bwlch rather sharpish and scurried off elsewhere without visiting Cad or even CC, and a first for us, a King Air! Comments and criticism welcome on all of the photos. :)

A slow morning was livened up by the arrival of a Tornado GR4 at around 1155, such a sight and sound! The next 2 hours were spent waiting for the next movements, which were a trio of Hawks, quickly followed up by an Typhoon T3, another first for us! A final first was the arrival of the Qinetiq Tucano, at 1630, which looks rather splendid in it’s colour scheme!

Personal highlights included the primer Typhoon, yet another first, which arrived at 1540 with another Typhoon and of course the superb Tornado pass at around 12 o'clock! Almost got carparked by the late Herc, would have been a sorry ending! Didn't manage to get any of Lakenheath's finest today but I was not going to be greedy, had far more than I was expecting through I have to say, so all in all, a great day at Corris. :)

Great to meet up with Rob again, always a pleasure, definitely doing the Bwlch next time my friend! Comments and criticism are welcome as always, I can't seem to get my photos looking quite as I'd like them but oh well, kind of got used to the limitations of my set up. Time to save up for some new equipment methinks! ;) Also had to use a Picasa 3 watermark as when I exported from Lightroom the photos were incredibly pixelated, so I will need to figure out how to avoid this problem in the future.

Cheers for looking guys!

Jack.

Cracking set Jack, Lightroom has done them justice. Had a great day with you and Tom and look forward to the exit next time. Will be posting mine later but im not exactly happy with them, I seemed to struggle with exposure a bit even though was using shutter or app priority and so im having to do some heavy pp work. Thanks for the company and laughs it was a good day, see you soon.

Just to add to this, my Typhoon primer photo has been added to the BBC Wales News Pictures Gallery, and also will be published in Combat Aircraft Magazine in December. Absolutely chuffed! :D

Glad you had a great day out chap.
As for critique, maybe start by dropping the saturation by a quite sizeable amount on the primer tiffy,I know its nicknamed the "flying dorito" but its been overcooked "ba-dum!" :P
Have a go at them again mate and getting a more natural backlit shot, trying to drag detail out can often lead to them looking not quite right, less is often better.
Good luck with them
Dave.

Haha! If you knew anything about me you'd know that low-level shots don't do anything for me in the slightest, it's one part of photography I have no interest in at all. Furthermore, if you read other sections of this forum, you'd notice that I don't care for selling my photos, and it doesn't interest me to see them printed in magazines, etc.

So no, no jealousy, just a statement. The colours are way off, it looks awful and if it's going to be printed in a magazine like that, I have to wonder if the magazine have any standards at all.

The magazine will edit photos to suit the page I would have thought. On Jack's permission I sorted the white balance and contrast, clarity etc, my result has improved it, so Jack will send the updated version to the magazine shortly.

To be truthful Chris, if you had any idea what it's like inside to see your own work printed in a magazine, whether it be photography or models, you would certainly change your mind about sending stuff in.

To those who have given me feedback, thank you. To those who have been quite crude, you aren't helping. I know I have limitations to my gear, but a little vote of confidence would be nice once in a while.

Out of order, Chris. It doesnt make you look good, better to keep your opinions to yourself

Hallucinogenic colours, shooting into the sun and static props aren't limitations of you're gear.. That's down to you, the photographer.

Hope this helps!

Just curious, what processing (if any at all) did you do to these?

OK, I did shoot into the sun, but it was my first time and it was cloudy. If I had decided to move I would have missed the Tornado, and on another occasion we debated to move we would have missed the primer Tiffie. As for hallucinogenic colours, I don't think they are, probably only slightly overcooked. And as for the final quote... you tell me I knew that Herc was coming and had the settings exactly right for prop blur!

I did the obvious exposure, clarity, saturation, blacks, whites, shadows and vibrance that you would do in most photograph edits.

Jack.
