1/48 Monogram F-101 Voodoo - decals on!

Post by steve149c » Wed Dec 19, 2012 7:54 pm

Hi all,

Had this ready for a few months now, just got the extras. So all ready to start, first up the box and sprues,

Image

And

Image

Image

Image

Raised panel lines on this kit, so it is going to be a full rescribe!

Image

Decals (as the kit ones seem passed it), with the resin air scoops and metal pitot

Image

Gong with this option

Image

Hopefully get started soon,

Cheers

Steve

And we are off!

Thanks Patrick, yes it has the full length burner cans, so that is going to be fun!

Have started the rescribe, got the left hand side of the body done, which has been washed with dark dirt and needs tidying up, but as this is my first full rescribe I am happy, once the repairs are done!

Image

Also got the starboard wing done, apart from the area in black I am very happy with this! Will refine the front curve once mated to the body

Image

This is labour intensive, so it's going to take a few days of steady plodding before any assembly!

Cheers

Thanks Patrick,

Steady progress, both halfs now mated up so that the described panel lines will join up. Lovely kit this, loads of detail. The cockpit is inserted into the mated halves.

Starboard side nose, few small areas to tidy up

Image

The spine, still need to remove centre line seam and lots of filling and rescribbing here to do

Image

Have finished both upper wing sections, nose halfs mated, with the plastic nose removed.

Cheers for looking

Patrick,

It's an OOB pit, but to be honest it's a cracker of a pit, will start that soon.

Hi all,

Ok, update, all the fuselage is just about described, couple of access panels to do, and a headache over one part, but will leave that for the moment. Assembly has started, the lower wing has had the air intakes on

Image

But this has left a gap that will need smoothing out

Image

The detail on this kit is great, just look at these wheel wells!

Image

Then the pit

Image

And finally the instrument panel, bang seats and two crew

Image

Should start painting soon, but still got to rescribe the underside of the wings and the elevators, but we are winning!

Cheers for looking

Hi all,

Back to ship tomorrow for another two weeks! But I've just ordered the Photoetch (cockpit and details) for this kit, plus the masks, so hopefully be able to spice up this great kit even more!

Thanks Radleigh, it's a great kit (so far)

Well I got back today to find my goodies have arrived, first up the excellent Photoetch from Eduard, which covers the cockpit, undercarriage, air brakes, wheels bays and a few others

Image

Image

Plus the masks, both for cockpit and wings stripes I think

Image

Then a quick dry fit to recharge the batteries

Image

Which reveals a nice gap to seal up, plus I have some more rescribbing to do

Image

More soon I hope, just setting in to be home!

Cheers

Thanks Jamie,

Update for today, body is joined to the wings and the large joint will get filled later with squadron green. I have starting inserting the PE, and it's a testament to this kit that the cockpit gets very little. Here is shown the fine wiring and wheel door

Image

The only PE is for the main instrument panel pilot, and the left hand side of the RIO of the instrument. I have left these unpainted, as several reference shots shows these as bare metal. Plus the PE is nicely toned. The usual Eduard instrument panel is behind with PVA.

The cockpit insertion was really hard work, fiddly. But it's in, here is the RIO pit

Image

And the pilots pit, I painted the panels black, then using a white pencil I rubbed over, this picked out all the switches lovely.

Image

Cheers of now

Thanks Patrick, she's coming along nicely now

Front wheel bay assembly painted, assembled, then slid into place, with the nose cone attached. Again testament to this kit, only one part of PE for the wheel bay!

Image

Just behind you can see the rotating bomb bay, well err this wont be rotating on this model due to an error on my part, oops. So it is navigation side out, which will have some PE attached later

Then the job of sealing that wing joint, Tamiya tape near the edge, and lots of squadron green, will leave for 48 hours before sanding to allow for shrink back

Image

Tomorrows job is starting on the ancillaries, fuel tank, ejector seat and undercarriage

Cheers for now

Thanks Patrick and TC!

Well it's update time, approaching the fun part!

First up the wing joint sealed up very well and sanded smooth

Image

The air intakes for the main engines are a real pain to align and then get the intakes smooth off, but I'm happy with where I am now

Image

Next up the PE is taking shape, he is the additional insert for the air brakes, very nice

Image

And the air brakes, left hand one with the PE on, other without. Canopy masked up with the masking kit (I hate this masking set, too fiddly)

Image

The fuel tanks are together and the elevators scribed

Image

And the resin air scoops in place, these are gorgeous

Image

That's it for the moment, got lots of small spray jobs to do, flaps and airbrakes to go red. Plus a few last bits of PE to do, the canopy, HUD and I've still got the ejector seats to paint!

Cheers for now
