The Olympic Hype Moan thread

Post by RichC » Fri Jul 13, 2012 10:47 am

Am i the only one who is sick to death of seeing and hearing about the Olympics? Don't get me wrong, it's nice if we win something but it is now becoming extremely boring before it has even started.
The news is full of it, adverts on TV full of it, internet is full of it, adverts on the side of the road. It's become more of an annoyance now for me being a grumpy middle aged man (35  )
Even areas which are no where near the bl__dy event are being affected.

I'm dreading the embarrassment of our open ceremony, it won't be able to compete with the likes of China last time or those before it. I'm surprised we don't have any morris dancers in it and a few nobodies making a fool out of themselves in front of billions of people.

But, what really is annoying is the torch relay. What is the damn point of this.... clogging up the roads with some plank running around with a torch in his hand. Just take it to the olympic site the morning of opening and be done with it, you don't need to run around the UK trying to big up the Olympics anymore than it is.
All these people lining the streets to some person running past at 2mph as if it was the Queen or someone special.
A friend said to me..."Had a great day at the Olympic torch relay today". "Oh right, so what was actually the great moment then?" She couldn't answer. Was it the fact she saw some chap slowly run past with this thing in his hand or was it the fact it wasn't raining at the time? Not sure myself.

Interestingly, i can't be that alone, BBC have done a poll

Selected poll questions
SOURCE: COMRES/BBC NEWS, 2,017 ADULTS IN THE UK INTERVIEWED BETWEEN 29 JUNE - 8 JULY 2012

The torch relay is making me more interested in the Olympics

Agree 40%
Disagree 58%
Don't know 2%

With less than a month to go, I am feeling more excited about London 2012 now than I was at the beginning of the year

Agree 36%
Disagree 61%
Don't know 3%

The 2012 Olympic Games will mainly benefit London and not the rest of the country

Agree 74%
Disagree 24%
Don't know 2%

Agree, it’s been a pain over the last 3 months, I have had same thoughts, and the opening ceremony could be a poor show. The torch relay is a joke, government bangs on about being green, taxing land fill, increase fuel duty to discourage me to drive less, and then they back the idea of running god knows how many vehicles up and down the country following the damn flame, people criss crossing to look at it, to run, limp and hop with it. I live in Trowbridge, one runner from Trowbridge had to go to Bristol to do her 200 yards, and one of the runners in Trowbridge came from...........yes..........Bristol :S The father of the Trowbridge runner tried to organize a swap with the Bristol runner, so they could both run in their home town, organizers didn’t want to know.

I was on Holiday in Crete when the 2004 games were on in Greece and I remember the Greeks saying they couldn’t afford the games, it would take 20 years to pay for them, and I can’t help but wonder when I see the reports about the state of the Greek economy, they may have been right..

Funny thing about the torch carriers, I thought it was for people who had done something for their community........samsung had a load of carriers as did Coca Cola and Macdonalds. The person who took it past Stonehenge was actually an American.

When it came through Rochdale only one carrier actually came from the town.

Whose going to join my Seb Coe is a prat group, what has he actually done.....apart from being able to run fast that is.

Another joke, our Olympic Pistol team have to practice abroad and get special permission to bring their weapons into the country....the shooting facilities also will be demolished afterwards as .....now this is the good bit........pistol shooting is illegal in the country so the facilities wont be needed.

We had Will'iam do the torch bearing down here in Taunton, so there must be a few Americans involved. They obviously can't find 8000 people from the UK to run a mile each.

I would worry about him as a choice of torch bearer Rich . . . . .

I was on the Parade in Taunton when he came through, every four or five steps he kept saying - "Dope!".
Now . . . . i know Taunton has a reputation, but jeeez! Will . . . the cameras were there dude! (And nobody supplied him!)

I cant help thinking about all the money that has been pumped into the Olympics, personally I think it would have been more beneficial if that money had been spent on improving local facilities in every town & village around the UK!

£24 billion the Games were due to cost, it would have been far better just to give everyone in the country £300 and we could have saved a few bob and Londoner's wouldn't have all the traffic congestion!

I heard the other day that as McDonald's are one of the main sponsors, none of the catering companies at any venue are allowed to sell chips on their own, which let's be honest, is a complete frigging joke.

I can just see it now... After every athlete has completed their sport they are presented with a Happy meal containing a nice McCholestorol Death burger & salty fries...Yum!

Olympics & McDonalds dont really go together do they. So much for promoting your 5 a day!

They made a real mess of a local roundabout near me, they've put in around 70 traffic lights, cut it in half and put a road through the middle and all it does is save less than a minute for those going to see the sailing at Weymouth. And in doing so they closed it off/restricted it for several weeks beforehand whilst it was being constructed which meant a simple journey would take much longer.

Ahhh the Wimborne Road roundabout on the A31. Been there twice this week - a real work of art. So much so, I think that whoever designed it should be donated to Damian Hurst so he can cut the :grr: in half and pickle them in brine. Total spanner. What is it about traffic lights that councils seem attracted to? :grr: -

We can't afford it and with two weeks to go its beginning to show! thanks for the rant boys and girls great to clear my chest

Its a (--------) disgrace (insert swear words)......
When we are so hard up, the Govn think the UK as a whole will benefit from all this and yet those only in the immediate area of the site will benefit (businesses).
The country as a whole are now nearly £30 billion in debt due to the Olympics already, of which only London and Weymouth will benefit from. This at a time when we are conducting massive budget cuts to all sectors. But oh.... SPORT gets the funds. Someone needs a wakeup call and realise that the UK as a whole doesn't get naff all but problems from these games.
Think what the price they have paid for this would do to charities and mainstream funding.
Not going into the NHS or other sectors, think what defence programmes (this is FC afterall) would benefit from this money instead in a time when, the whole of Europe are cost cutting dramatically......

Its funny but with all this bad publicity etc, boredom about the games, Seb Coe seems absent from our screens, mind you thats no bad thing.

Seb Coe is a boring twit and always has been. He gets in hissy fits if he doesn't get his own way.
