Anyone know.....?
Anyone in the know actually know what has caused the runway repairs coming up at Leuchars? Have the Tornado's Afterburners burnt a hole in a dangerous part of the tarmac or has this been scheduled since the last time in 2007? Did something go wrong?
Re: Anyone know.....?
Saw an article today that it's in preparation for the Typhoons. Shall find the link and post.

£24m only to find at the end of it you've got s drainage problem, now that should have been spotted when it was first done - hope it's not the real reason but who knows - .

Firm liable for runway repair
A CONTRACTOR who completed a £22 million restoration of the main runway at RAF Leuchars is now having to foot an extensive bill for remedial work to deal with flooding problems.
This was made clear by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) yesterday in advance of the temporary redeployment to Lossiemouth of the few remaining Leuchars-based Tornado jets to allow work to be carried out.
Problems with the runway have arisen just two and a half years after work was completed in an operation which forced the cancellation of the 2007 airshow and now there will be another runway closure of several weeks.
At the time it was said that the work would last for 15 years and would be capable of coping with very heavy aircraft.
News of the new problem was given to north-east Fife MP Sir Menzies Campbell last month in a letter from minister of state for the armed forces Bill Rammell but at the time RAF Leuchars would only say that the jets were being moved north to help the base prepare for the arrival of the first Typhoon squadron.
The minister, however, said there was a surface water problem and the new work would ensure continuing flying operations.
The Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) role being carried out at Leuchars will shift to RAF Lossiemouth when the work starts on March 11. The project is expected to run until the end of April.
Yesterday an MoD spokesman said the contractor who carried out the work is required to rectify the problem under the terms of the original contract.
“There will be no additional cost to the MoD for this remedial work,” he said.
Attempts to obtain a comment from runway contractor Morgan EST were unsuccessful and the RAF was unable to put a figure on the cost for the remedial work.
In the meantime work continues at Leuchars in advance of the arrival of Typhoons in the autumn and it is expected that over the next few years expenditure will run to around £100 million.
The disused QRA sheds have already been demolished to make way for a new ejection seat bay and contractors are working on a new community centre.
Other future work will involve the building of a sophisticated new interactive two-cockpit simulator, a tank jettison facility and an engine test centre, or “hush house,” to disperse noise.

Just a gentle dig folks about some of the postings on this thread. I assume the majority of us are enthusiasts and/or photographers, not connected in any way professionally with military aviation, so it is mildly irritating to read smart-ass comments along the lines of, I know the answer but aren't allowed to say anything - it might be intended as a joke by the author but I think it rather childish and a waste of our space and time, and thus unworthy of the fine fellows we trust to protect this fair land of ours. If I get the chance to visit Lossie this week or next in my ignorant non-professional hobby- following capacity I'll post what I see - if I haven't had my access taken away!

There is a big difference between someone who can't say for professional reasons and someone who won't say for selfish reasons.
Looking forward to getting up to Lossie soon to see the F3's in action.

Re: Anyone know.....?
The first 2 arrive today 1305ish. Both armed (asuming these are the QRA jets) they are in 12 Sqn HAS sites, there is an area on the 15Sqn line for the rest of the jets (where the German Phantoms were during 2007). Have posted pics

Re: Anyone know.....?
Ok guys calm down, calm down I reckon we'll all be aware that there are somethings that we are able to know about and some things that the Military want kept from the Enthusiasts/public domain like every business, place of work etc. I learnt to respect that long ago (15/16 years when I started work) and I have found that a valuable lesson in life.
Re: Anyone know.....?
With the greatest of respect to all, I think it is now time to let this drop before it turns ugly.
I think all have shared their opinions.
It would be a shame to get all heavy handed and start deleting posts....................
Many thanks.
