We heard two loud bangs at Peterborough, 50 miles from Coventry. They were thunderclaps.

This bang is being reported all over the Midlands and as far south as Swindon. See the QRA thread in the Heads Up Section

De ja vu!

We heard exactly the same thing last year which turned out to be two typhoons on a QRA intercepting an airliner and thought it was either an earthquake, plane crash, oil tanker explosion etc but ours didn't make the national media!

It's an incredible bang, when we heard ours last year all the pheasants in the wood across the road started chirping on an otherwise deathly silent night! Very spooky! And quite frightening!

Didn't hear a thing here in Derbyshire, as we were in the middle of a colossal thunderstorm at that time.

I witnessed the first of the QRA typhoons departing at coningsby just prior to that incident and the first one was really shifting :Wow: full burners and was really going for it! So if the sound barrier went it doesnt suprise me

Ah the general public at large, bless them! what bothers me more was we missed it as we were driving to Northolt. Apparently it was quite loud over Brize :'(

Wonder why the sudden change by the MOD to allow supersonic over land. Never used to be the case when aircraft were scrambled for QRA!

As for the helicopter being on a 7500 squawk, surely the controlling authority would have had it identified initially and observed its routing, so it was hardly "unknown" as some media outlets are saying!

Heard this in Swindon, It was surprisingly loud, I didn’t think sonic boom at the time, didn't hear any fast jets. I went out side expecting to see a car wrapped around a tree or something similar.
A couple of people at work are not buying the QRA story, they believe its a cover up for Fracking http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17448428
