Cold War Jets
Hey,
I was wonder if you guys could help me out, because i am in the Air Cadets and will be doing modelling at the wing training day at Linton, and i can't think of any planes to make. The category is Cold war jets and it has to be a 1:72 scale and can't have more than two engines.
I was looking for something diffrent you know, not the usual stuff people would go for.
And if you have any ideas do you know of where i can get the best models for them?
Any ideas?
Thanks,

Hi,about Cold War,you have a big choice from all manufacturers, plastic or resin kits.do you prefer west or east side of iron courtain? usually you can find all models at online stores.

Re: Cold War Jets
It would be a plastic model kit, and not to sure on what you mean by east or west of the iron curtain lol?
Re: Cold War Jets
I mean NATO or Warsaw Pac aircrafts
by the way,a classic can to be an F-104 or a MiG-21,or a BAC Lightning or a MirageIII . A nice but hard to find plane is the Supermarine Swift from Hawk in 1/72 scale, take a look on ebay

Re: Cold War Jets
You may be aware that we have the Cold War GB coming up, so i've been looking at what I have in my stash for it, and like you i'm looking at something different. When you say Cold War, is it limited to Europe, or would it include the conflicts that took place during the Cold War period, in which case you would have a huge range of subjects?Easty97 wrote:It would be a plastic model kit, and not to sure on what you mean by east or west of the iron curtain lol?
Is your build for a competition at the training day or is it just exhibiting a build? I was a member of South & West Yorkshire Wing, many moons ago and I won a few modelling competitions. If I was to offer one tip it would be to choose a build that would be eye catching, and like you've suggested, different to the norm. You'll probably find most will go for the normal choices of Lightnings, Phantoms, etc. Have you looked at Soviet options? I'm looking at building an IL-28 'Beagle' for the GB on here at present, which I wouldn't expect many people to choose to build. A lot of Soviet aircraft were bare metal, so a shiny Alcad painted jet would probably deffinately catch the eye.
Hope that helps,
Steve.

Re: Cold War Jets
Thanks for the replys it can be any aircraft really in the world but really i want to be looking a English, USA or a soviet aircraft.
Also Steve, it is for the training day, basically we build it at squadron and take it on the day for judging, and i agree that it should be something different to catch there eye more.
Thanks again,

Re: Cold War Jets
That's the same format we used to compete in then. The first build I won with was a Spit Mk22, and we modified the pilot that came with the kit to stand on the wing and be looking up and waving at the judges. That was quite liked. We also used to mount them on wooden bases as well, I don't know wether that helped but you could try it if the rules allow.Easty97 wrote:Thanks for the replys it can be any aircraft really in the world but really i want to be looking a English, USA or a soviet aircraft.

Re: Cold War Jets
How about something like the Sukhoi SU-25 Frogfoot, it's a favourite of mine, and with various colour schemes and weapon loads to choose from it could stand out from the crowd if lots of others choose bare metal schemes.
Hope this helps

I take it that no Scottish based aircraft are allowed!!!Easty97 wrote:Thanks for the replys it can be any aircraft really in the world but really i want to be looking a English, USA or a soviet aircraft.

What about the new Airfix Hawk with a bit of aftermarked decals to create one as used for airfield/local area defence? Other than that, i would be inclined to follow the WarPac route. Not sure though that there would be too much of the century fighters featured and there is plenty choice and of schemes and countries to choose from!
Arabest,
Geoff.
Re: Cold War Jets
The MiG-19 would make an interesting subject, rarely done (being inbetween the very well known '15 and '21), plus there are quite a few schemes available. Only problem is the only kit easily available is the KP one, which to be frank is a bit pants in comparison to others on the market. As Stuart sugests, the SU-25 is also a good bet. If you fancy an easy OOB build, then ill recommend the Academy MiG-23 or '27. Whilst not 100% accuarate, the detail is there, and they go together quite well.
Western side, the Revell Hunter builds up well if you can find one. Italeri have the F-104 Starfighter and F-100 Super Sabre on the shelves atm. There are quite a few Lightning kits around atm, the best being the Trumpeter versions.
As has been said, with a Cold War GB, you really are spoilt for choice, chances are if you pick something, itll be suitable!

Re: Cold War Jets
At the moment i have been looking at the Airfix Canberra, Vickers Valient, Buccaneer, Mig 15, Mirage F1 and also the Academy F-86F Sabre and the Revell Saab J-35J Draken.
Geoff, not too sure about the Hawk i think i am aiming for something more old if you know what i mean, and 7, i do like the idea of a F-104 and a kind of a Sabre, i think a lot of people may go for the Lightning though.

Re: Cold War Jets
It's already been suggested but the IL-28 is an eye catching model and if I remember correctly the kit (Airfix) came with Soviet, Polish and Chinese markings. Does the cold war include the Bamboo Curtain as well I wonder?

Re: Cold War Jets
Any of the USAF century series fighters are quite nice to make. Plus you don't too often see people making stuff like Voodoos, Delta Darts or Thunderchiefs.
Re: Cold War Jets
I have decided to go with the Academy F-14 Tomcat, which by the looks of it is a greatly made model, thanks for everyones ideas i will post some pictures up of the finished build, when finished
