FCHC-SPTA

Post by seven » Sat Jan 14, 2012 6:29 pm

My entry for the comp! The plan is if time and space permits (doubtful) to so a Salisbury Plain diorama from 2010, with some of the heli's that were seen using the facilities during that time. First two heli's are simple one's (i hope) a couple of Gazelle's, hopefully followed by one of the QinetiQ operated Mi-17's. Should these go as planned, ill also try to add a Lynx maybe even a CHinook or a Merlin to the mix.

Tonight im starting the first Gazelle, this one to be XZ936 of ETPS. Piccies to follow.

Happy modelling!

Not a bad idea Geoff-had thought of it, so as there's interest ill look into it. The original plan is for a FARP with a few types on the ground, and one or two in the circuit.

Also forgot to mention, and in case the Gazelle isnt a give away, it'll be in 1/72.

Update, cockpit of XZ936 is finished and waiting for joining of the fuselage before prep for spraying. May start the other Gazelle tomorrow and hopefully remember to take piccies during the assembly this time

As promised, here are a few piccies of the progress so far. Have managed to start both the second Gazelle (identity undecided yet) and the Mi-17 (identity forgotten at point of post), so have included a few of those also:
XZ936, (sink hole now noticed and sanded away!)

Typical airfix..

As it was as of tuesday night(have now added a face to each, the roof/canopy and skids. Also sanded and filled where nesessary)

Mi-17 cockpit

Another of the Mi-17 cockpit, not finished yet obviously-couldnt paint the top of the panels as the adhesive has still setting.

And the second, as yet unidentified Gazelle, with crew not yet fully modified to British standard! Also, note the modification for the MX-15 equipment. Thanks to Rick Iñghám for the only piccie i could find that had a clear image of the part!

More to follow soon, happy modelling!

Nah still looks like cockpit fest at the Heli Museum at the moment!

Though you can blame the A400M gunship, Meteor F.3(mod), F-22 and scratch built PGM-500 which are also on the bench :thumb:

Small update, just to show how the still as of yet unidentifyed Gazelle is coming along!

As you can see a bit of a foul up as i had forgotten to finish the pilots and insert the glazing before bringing the cabin together! Sorted now though, sanding the lower surfaces at the moment ready to attatch the skids and tailplane. Mi-17 is on the back burner as i need to get a crew and some more detail for the cabin before i can crack on with that. Also got the next helicopter in line planned (see mess, help needed!) and started a suprise guest which will be added at the end(hopefully :thumb: ).

Happy modelling!

Small update, have started the Army Lynx conversion. Bit of a foul up as ive lost one of the skids, so this is going to end up eating 3 Lynx kits!
This is too show the two main kits involved.

The nearly completed cockpit. Uses the hobbyboss cockpit, with the Airfix pilot's seats (because they are more accurate), HB interior seats (correctly laid out-albeit a little too close to the panel).

As of last night, i have test fitted the 'pit in the fuselage sides, which unsuprisingly for HB fits quite well. Will be using the rotor hub from the airfix kit, as technically its the most accurate. The tail rotor will be the HB one, as the Airfix one is from the prototype, therefore spins the wrong way! I have modified the hub assembly already as the mounting system from Airfix is opposite from HB, where the shaft is attatched to the hub and goes down to the gearbox, whereas the Airfix is the opposite. Will also need to theif a few parts from an Apache kit to do the version im planning (AH.5X).

Nothing on the Mi-17 yet, as im waiting for the interior parts from Hannants. Both Gazelle's are at the same point, just waiting on some warmer weather to start spraying. Also still looking for a suitable turret for one, already have the Nitesun sorted.

Update! Have done alot of work on the Lynx and Mi-17, with the both interior's now complete, and ive started to scratch build the Lynx's skids.

As can be seen here, i have also added the door slides from the Airfix Lynx, which although a bit overscale, will make the doors moveable.

A nice touch on the Mi-17 is the slidable side door, though im sure it wont be after a few coats of primer and paint!

Small update, just to say ive been working tirelessly on the two Gazelle's over the last couple of days, so they are nearly ready for spraying. The Lynx is also close, needing just a little more filler and masking. The Mi-17 isnt quite where i'd like it to be, so may slip behind schedule. Photo's to come, which i asure you will be of interest :thumb:
