Re: Buccaneers at Holme On Spalding Moor
Hunters XL602, 603 & lastly 580 were modded at Brough 1980 ish,Blue Fox radar, then test flown at HOSM. Kermit the T12 never went to Brough. It resided in a special clean hangar within a hangar! The a/c arrived with a fixed, immovable, side stick, but after take off problems we modded it to a compliant one. about 10 deg movement to give feel.I will never forget waiting on the flight line at HOSM on 17 March1982 for its' return from RAE,sadly not to be. John Leng was a good bloke to work for & involved all the team.Thank God he and S/L Myers (?) survived, just.teeonefixer wrote:Just before my time I'm afraid - but I'll ask aroundredfoxy wrote:Another nice photo John, thanks for posting. Re: Buccaneers at Holme On Spalding Moor
XE531 was the only Hunter with a side stick. The RN Hunters,XL580,602 &603 had the RH stick top removed to improve the view of radar display.Hope that helps.Am digging out photo's taken of Buccs, F4s,& the Reds all day visit to us in 1980,will post when I learn how.Would be easier for me to do an engine change on a Phantom!teeonefixer wrote:Oh yes, the RN Hunters rings a bell now.

Any luck with this so far? Would be excellent to see them, unfortunately HoSM seems to be one of those places rarely documented in photographs, particularly from its later years..Am digging out photo's taken of Buccs, F4s,& the Reds all day visit to us in 1980,will post when I learn how.Would be easier for me to do an engine change on a Phantom!

My father-in Law chirped up the other day about a Reds visit and especially Jan leeming who accompanied them ! Was that the same one ? (Years earlier, he had worked on the Buccaneer that struck a lampost on its delivery and needed an inner wing rebuild.)

Re: Buccaneers at Holme On Spalding Moor
I'm sorry to go off topic slightly, but it wasn't Cappa Pass that stopped the Bucc (and later Phantom) flight testing, it was the short narrow runway that did this. Cappa Pass chimney wasn't constructed until c.1970, I think all it did was put a stop to any possible runway extension for civillian purposes, as the company Dove (later Jetstream) continued to operate from Brough, among other company and private aircraft that could operate from the runway, I think the bigger stuff went to HoSM. Wasnt the airfield infrastructure at HoSM significantly upgraded in around 1967 prior to the start of Phantom works? Therefore clearly Hawker Siddeley/Blackburn were not interested in developing the airfield at Brough for that purpose.Just a shame the chimney at the Capper Pass smelting works was too tall to allow it to be done at the airfield/factory
I find it a shame that photo documentation is so hard to come by as far as HoSM and the jet years are concerned. I guess with it being in such a remote location, and photography having been strictly forbidden, there aren't many pics out there. That is not to detract from the excellent (rare?) collections that have been posted on here however.

Re: Buccaneers at Holme On Spalding Moor
A thread i keep going back to . . . . stunning pictures with that rarity value that just grab you. Just wish i could contribute.
But alas, my area of prior work is Westlands, anybody here from within the gate?
Dallas?, the mazza? (The weapon system rig up high
), the security Landy with the loudspeaker which would "fart" loudly every time it was turned on or the vehicle turned left? The satellite buildings that housed some of the wind tunnel models, the wind tunnel itself! (that horrific staircase up to the control room for the tunnel, with the huge arty shell at the top).
Its a shame i could never take a camera in there when working. (Apache period)
