Fisher 1:32 Sea Fury FB.11

Post by HighlandSniper » Sun Jan 10, 2010 11:46 pm

I made a very audacious purchase this evening, one I've been considering for some time - a Fisher 1:32 Sea Fury FB.11 kit. I've been fancying one of these for a while now, and after my previous disastrous encounter with limited run kits (Aerodynamix 1:32 Buccaneer S.2*), I'm feeling a lot more confident with this one.

It looks like a superb kit, and certainly all of the reviews are very positive. I spoke with Paul Fisher this evening to ensure I get it the way I want it, i.e.with the later folded wing set, rather than the original wing which you can add a wing-fold to, and also with the addition of the decals from the T.20 kit as well as this has all of the stenciling whereas the FB.11 doesn't.

I just hope SWMBO doesn't find out what I paid for it - I've never paid so much for a kit before.

* Unlike most, I did at least get my Buccaneer, albeit about 2 years late and minus about half a dozen parts. It wasn't all it was cracked up to be and I eventually sold the kit to a local modeller and recovered my outlay. He built it far better thn I would have done.

Now that does look like a nice purchase, you have to treat yourself now and again. I cant bring myself to tell the mrs how much I spent at telford last year.
I hope we will see a build or at the least some finished model pics, or if you have the time could you do a review as Ive seen these kits but never in the plastic (so to speak)

Other than that I hope you enjoy your purchase :thumb:

I hope to have said kit in my hands within a couple of weeks unless Customs/Royal Mail do their worst as they did with my Hold & Fold etch folder recently. I'll start with a box review and take it from there. The one-piece fuselage is going to make such a difference. The great thing is that this kit is going to need very little other than what's in the box, however I may use Eduard seat belts and perhaps some MDC/Reheat/Waldron instrument decals depending on what I can lay my hands on.

I'll be building it as a Fleet Air Arm machine, possibly personalised to one flown by an uncle of SWMBO based on family photos.

Excelent, I look forward to that. I so far havnt made a resin aircraft yet but I am slowly venturing into mixed media kits. My first will be my classic airframes Fairey gannet. Then I will be doing my Ely gate guard Meteor NF/14 which will be a convert from the C/A meteor NF/11-13. Ive just got my projects for the sutton show to sort out before I attempt these though

The CA Gannet is on my wants list, but I can't help hoping that Trumpeter/HobbyBoss will scale up their 1:72 offering. The trouble for me is that my FAA aircraft must have folded wings and the only 1:48 Gannet wing-fold is the rather crude Airwaves p/e set originally produced for the Dynavector vacform kit. There again, there's a superb resin wing-fold set produced in two versions for both the Trumpeter and Revell Gannets, hopefully a 1:48 version would result if a mainstream kit appears.

The CA Gannet is a lovely kit with great detail.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a trumpeter effort sooner or later, Ive always had a soft spot for the ole' gannets ever since I saw my first one at duxford when I used to volunteer with my uncle.

The moulding on the C/A gannet is very nice and the resins are crisply molded. They are expensive but I would say worth every penny. :thumb:

I was hoping Trumpeter would do more Gannets but I get the feeling that they've moved-on now sadly. A 48th AEW3 would have been lovely and I'm starting to think the CA kit will never appear - it's been listed for years now.

You should be okay with the CA kits as they're actually IM plastic with only a few resin bits to add, so they're a good way to get started on resin. Be warned that the CA kits don't fit together all that well so you have to be prepared for some careful trimming, sanding and messing around but the end results are fantastic - usually (the Canberra kits were rubbish!).

I'd like the Fisher Sea Fury kit but I'm not fond enough of the Fury to spend that much money! It's a beautiful kit though for sure. I'm waiting for Fisher's Hunter conversion which is due out soon - at last!

The Gannet is a great favourite, I actually got as far as taxying out to the runway at Lossie in the back of a T.5 back in 1975, but the damned thing went u/s. By that time 849 Sqn. was running down and gash flights were few and far between, never got another chance.

Always loved the Sea Fury - there was one on the gate at Lossie back in the late sixties (along with a Sea Hawk, Hellcat, Gannet and Buccaneer S.1 at different times) plus one of SWMBO's uncles flew them off of HMS Ocean off Korea.

If Fisher's Hunter conversion is anything like the previous kits, it'll be superb. He also has what he describes as "A classic British twin engined fighter in 1/32 scale to be announced shortly" on the way.

My Sea Fury arrived at lunchtime - pretty amazing service - and it snuck in under the Customs radar saving me quite a few bob in extra charges.

Initial impressions are extremely good with superb moulding and detail, with less flash than many mainstream plastic kits and minimal moulding blocks for the minor parts.

I'll take some photos and post a box review within a few days.

I'll take some pix tomorrow/Saturday. Initial examination looks very good indeed, I haven't test-fitted anything yet but everything looks very hopeful.
