Pretty sure anyone can put a Mayday call or a PAN call out if they see the incident, it doesnt have to be called by the aircraft in question, so RED 1 may have seen it, or had it reported to him by another aircraft, or as you say by RED 4 himself on A2A.

Will all come out in the investigation im sure, just curious.


[Boring story....]A girly Fire lady at Yeovilton once rolled a fire vehicle at the PAR cross cut when I was on Tower, the Ground controller on seeing it roll called a PAN on the radio - first and only ever time ive come across anyone in ATC doing that!!![End of boring story]

As if the media hasn't already irresponsibly got enough wrong after the crash, ITN now even reports that RAF Hawks are "fighter jets"!

The hawk is a more than capable fighter jet, I know pilots of Tornado and the Jaguar that said if you got in a close air combat (dogfight) with a hawk then you were in for serious problems.

The hawks of 100 Sqn regularly hassle Typhoons and it is not always the way you'd think it would turn out!

The T1 is capable of carrying a centreline gun pod (30mm Aden) and then sidewinder/bombs or even rocket pods.

Late this afternoon called into RAF Scampton to write a few words and sign the condolences book for Jon.
To read some of the tributes and especially the drawings and words written by the youngsters was very moving.
Anyone wishing to do the same the book is in the entrance to the Guardroom at the Main Gate.
Parking is in the car park to the left as you turn into the gate.
Whilst we were there as one car left another came in so plenty of people are still turning up for this.

I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support and kind words at this difficult time. Jon would have been so touched and overwhelmed by everything that has been created in his name and memory.

I would love to be able to thank everyone individually but that is just not possible due to the sheer scale of the tributes received. As reported, I am taking Jon’s place in the Coast to Coast bike ride in October raising money for Fly2help and the Royal Air Force Association and I would like to thank everyone for their generous donations.

I’d also like to announce that plans are underway to set up a charity in Jon’s name which will combine Jon’s values and passions. Further details will be released in the following weeks and I will be taking everyone’s fantastic ideas posted here and elsewhere into consideration. Thank you again so much for your continued support, I can’t tell you how much it means to me and everyone who knew Jon.

Red Arrows crash 'souvenir hunters' warned by police

Detectives are investigating reports of "souvenir hunting" following a Red Arrows jet crash which killed the pilot.

Flt Lt Jon Egging, 33, from Rutland, died when his Hawk T1 aircraft crashed into a field in the village of Throop, near Bournemouth Airport, on 20 August.

Dorset police have confirmed two reports of people collecting wreckage.

The force warned that anyone found to be taking debris from the RAF aircraft will be committing theft.

An inquest into Flt Lt Egging's death has been opened and adjourned in Bournemouth.
Aircraft grounded

A post-mortem examination showed the cause of death was multiple injuries.

Coroner Sheriff Payne said it was unlikely a full inquest would be held for up to 12 months.

All Hawk T1 aircraft were grounded after the crash, but the restriction has now been lifted and the incident is being investigated by the Military Aviation Authority.

The Red Arrows began training again on Tuesday using eight planes instead of nine.

They have used the dual control BAE Systems Hawk T1 aircraft since 1979.
