Never mind the quality its the content that counts! Thanks for posting.
Been a fan of the Bucc ever since seeing an NA.39 at Farnborough in '61. Was also stationed at Honington in '69 when they were first delivered to 12 Sqdn -- great memories of Buccaneer operations there.

Purely a guess but could the aircraft be sitting on a building designed to test the rotating bomb bay ? Maybe the building can be pressurised.

The date of the open day is around 1980. XK527 is carrying 4x P3T missiles,I know 'cos I fitted them! The rig 525 is sitting on is,I think is the rig we did the ground firing of the JP233 sub-munition dispenser.PS P3T was later named Sea Eagle.

I'm told the fuselage XK525 came from West Freugh via Brough in 1978 for, as PhantomII says, JP233 firing trials in 1981. Fright testing (on a different airframe !!!) took place around the same time. Jettison of the pod was quite scary !

Thankyou for posting these photos - any more ?

I'd say it was just for the open day - in the same way the Navy used to put "Fly Navy" on their aeroplanes for shows.

Not directly related to HOSM but this olde Buccaneer picture I "acquired" (from the desk of a designer that retired) many years ago may be of interest.
(and is also an excuse to keep this fine thread alive !)

Image

Buccaneer S1 XN923 was flown from Boscombe Down in the 60's on various weapons trials.
It is seen here fitted with a nose for the very first Low-Light Television night-flying aids.
This is particular interest to me as this nose that was modified for "Nightbird" operations in the early 80's (on S.2 XV341) using the Ferranti TICM2 instalation. BAe crews flew this at progressively lower altitudes and progressively darker nights & worse weather at low level across country and to ranges. It was pretty scary stuff and they certainly earned their pay !

I have one or two other bits n' pieces buried somewhere....

Thanks for posting that John, you can never see too many Bucc pics, see if you can uncover the others. Regards Paul.

I know this isn't a Bucccaneer and not a great shot (a scan of a print off a slide at IAT 78 (? - the anniversary line up))

However, the unique Hunter T12 flew from RAE Farnborough from the late 70's on early trials of a RAE/BAe Fly-by-wire flight control system. It also flew from HOSM for a short while after modifications including a rudimentary sidestick fitted for one of the pilots.
It was lost in an engine explosion on take off from Farnborough in the early 80's (I'll find the date later) severly injuring the BAe Test Pilot, John leng, who ejected through the fireball.
Image

Just a reminder of the varied work that has gone through Brough & HOSM over the years that most people there now won't have an inkling about !

Another nice photo John, thanks for posting. Was that one of the Hunters we had in experi for modding ?, we had two in there when I was on nights for a while in the 7o's. Regards Paul.
