Can you help?

Post by Flyingmonster » Tue May 17, 2011 10:49 pm

Morning all!

Can anyone help with regards to he best way to make buildings/hangars ets for a Diorama?

The reason I ask is for the RAF Waddington Diorama for John at the WAVE.

I think the Hangars will have to be Made due to the size we will be working with.

Any suggestions let me know :)
Cheers

Faller did a helicopter hangar in 1/87, it is reasonably sized (could take 2 fighter types side by side) so could provide the basis for a larger one if you simply scale it up. They are quite hard to come by though, last one i saw on ebay went for £149!!

Best piccie i can find:

You'd need an awful lot of space for even one 72nd scale bomber hangar, especially if you add the access paths etc., to scale. Think you'd have to go for 144th scale.

If it's for WAVE, I would think your easiest diorama solution would be the Vulcan ORP. That would be an acceptable size in 144th scale.

I think it's "Operational Readiness Platform", an apron used by large aircraft for QRA duties.

I might be wrong but you get the idea John !

Yup, there's one directly opposite WAVE, attached to the end of the runway. Built to accommodate four Vulcans and did so on many occasions. It's not too big to display four Vulcans to scale if you opted for 144th.

See here:-
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie= ... 4&t=h&z=17" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To give you an indication of size, the runway width is 200ft. Vulcan wing span is 111ft of course. ;)

Just an idea, but if you did wanna go 1/72 scale how about just building the front section of the hangar and attach that to a painted diorama background on the wall?

Seen this type of thing done in plenty of museums when space is at a primium.

I've got the card templates for a model of Bentwaters' control tower. It could probably be modified to be like Waddington's tower.

Was the scale issue ever resolved with this? I thought it was likely going to be of mixed scale, as even 1/444 was going to be rather large.

Size is always the problem with diorama displays. If you went any smaller than 144th scale, you don't have many Vulcan models to choose from, other than the little Corgi diecast, but I don't think that model even has any wheels (and it's not the most accurate of models).

Personally, I think the most interesting thing to see would be a model of the entire airfield. How about scaling-up a photocopy of the airfield (off Google or similar) to the biggest size that space permits, and build a three-dimensional model on that?

The scale of the model of the types that were based will be a mix of 1/144 and 1/72.

With regards to the actual diaorama I am just waiting for some dimensions and we can go from there :thumb:
