12th Annual Abingdon Air & Country Charity Show...08/05/2011

Post by oagey » Thu Jul 01, 2010 3:27 pm

Despite the set-backs and disappointment from this year’s Abingdon Air & Country Charity Show on May 2nd,the all-volunteer organising committee have pulled together and will be going ahead with the 12th event in the show’s history in 2011.

Instead of the previous early May Bank Holiday weekend, next year the show will be held on Sunday 8th May(the weekend after the Bank Holiday). This has been decided purely as a cost-cutting exercise…many military airfields are not open on a Bank Holiday Monday, and there-fore the show needs to hire(..& pay) for the airfield, security personnel and associated infrastructure and accommodation for visiting aircrew up to and including the Tuesday lunchtime after the show weekend.By having the show on a “normal” weekend all aircraft will be able to head home on the Monday there-by saving a day’s worth of costs which could be allocated elsewhere within the show set-up.

As in previous years the 2011 Abingdon Air & Country Charity Show will provide a good all-round value for money day out for everybody. As well as the flying and static aircraft displays it is hoped to include Craft,Farmer’s Mkt and general Trade Stalls,classic/historic cars, commercial, steam and agricultural vehicles, live music, arena displays and much more….and once again will be held in support of the local Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust
To help with the running costs involved in organising the show, the committee will soon be putting together a selection of attractive sponsorship packages. These will be available to see on the web-site(http://www.abingdonfayre.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) within the next few weeks.
In the meantime any queries can be sent to Neil(neilsevent@aol.com) or Andy(andyandsuep@aol.com) Porter on 01235 529142 or to Colin Smith(07749219001 or smithoag@aol.com) or look out for our Publicity/Tombola Stall at a wide range of events between now and next May

Many thanks for all your support in years past, and especiallly the difficult times around the 2010 show

Colin

Robin

we are certainly hoping to have aircraft on the ground in 2011,hence the list of hoped-for static aircraft.

We are in communication with the authorities at Abingdon airfield, with the aim of avoiding a repetition of 2010's VERY late cancellation of this aspect of the show

For fly-in purposes, please contact Neil Porter at neilsevent@aol.com

Thanks for interest and enquiry

Morning all

the Abingdon branch of Chancellors Estate Agents have kindly allowed the
2011 Abingdon Air & Country Show to use their "For Sale" boards to help
publicise the show on May 8th(http://www.abingdonfayre.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

These boards are normal Chancellors "For Sale"/"Sold" flag-pole type
boards but instead of the words "For Sale" or "Sold" they will have
"Abingdon Air & Country Show...Abingdon airfield,Dalton
Barracks,Abingdon...8th May 2011",or something very similar.

This is where I need your help please........

At Chancellors,Abingdon's request these boards can only be put up in the
OX13 & OX14 post-code areas,so I'm asking you to please think if you
know anyone living in these areas who would be willing to have a board
on their property for about 4-6 weeks in the run-up to the show date in
early May

If you,or someone you know, feel you can help then please let me know via
this forum or telephone me on 07769689823

cheers

I have to say what an excellent line up that is for a small airshow, and I'm looking forward to it. Great start to the season, anything else will be a bonus.

I assume its impossible but the mere mention of the VC10 taking part made me go weak at the knees thinking it could land and take-off there!

Gents, this has been posted by Neil on ukar:

"Ok this is a heads up in general.

DE have conducted their inspection again and their will be changes to the normal line up people come to expect to see on the deck. This is all we can say at present and we will update everyone as soon as we know as time is ticking away but hopeful of compromises.

The team!"

Sounds like DE (Defence Estates) are being supportive as ever....

PRESS RELEASE

The forthcoming 12th annual Abingdon Air & Country Show, taking place on Abingdon Airfield, Dalton Barracks on Sunday 8th May will feature a true british icon of the skys.

The mighty Avro Vulcan bomber is planned to kick start its 2011 display season by appearing at Abingdon, the first time in 21 years since its last appearance at the then annual Battle of Britain At Home Days when Abingdon was a fulltime Royal Air Force Station.

This particular Vulcan, XH558, is the last and only surviving airworthy example in the world, now under private ownership. Her final flight in Royal Air Force service was on 23rd March 1993 to Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire, having been sold off by the Ministry of Defence to C Walton Ltd. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust was formed, headed by Dr Robert Pleming to return the aircraft to flight, with funding helped by the Heritage Lottery Funds in December 2003 and restoration work starting in 2005.

This remarkable achievement came to an end on 18th October 2007 when XH558 flew again, the first time in 14 years with over £7 million pounds being spent on the project. Since then, it has been kept flying at airshows around the UK by donations from the huge fanbase of followers but is in constant need for financial support to help keeping her flying. More information on the Vulcan can be found at http://www.vulcantothesky.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Air & Country Show organiser Neil Porter said ' We are absolutely thrilled to have the Vulcan appear with us, on its first 2011 appearance. Last year our star was the Dutch F16 fighter for example, this year its this magnificent example of british aviation. We all hope the weather behaves, aircraft serviceability is 100% & funding to allow XH558 to fly down to us, display and return home which is Robin Hood Airport, Yorks'

' The aircraft has such a large following and is just as popular as the Red Arrows and Batle of Britain Memorial Flight!'

The Vulcan heads up a four hour flying display featuring both old and new including from the Royal Air Force, with the show featuring Static aircraft, Crafts, Tank rides, Live Music and many other attractions for all the family to enjoy. Advance tickets are on sale at local Tourist Information Centres, aswell as on the website: http://www.abingdonfayre.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The show starts around 10am but people are advised to arrive earlier to avoid traffic queueing because the Vulcan certainly attracts large crowds!!!

Don't know the exact display time for Abingdon but 558 is scheduled to leave Finningley at 16.15 and return around 18.00 (BST).
