It looks like it will happen,the red cross area pulling out of benghazi, wonder how long it will take for one of the U N countries to offer to help gaddafi to rebuild.Is this going to be another opportunity lost.

What are we going to do to help?? send aircraft over that we no longer have?? Send billions of pounds worth of aid that we can no longer afford?? Let's face it, most of the UN countries are in the same state as the good old united kingdom (if we can call it that these days). Would you ask the government of a country that can't look after it's own, to help you?? I know I wouldnt

I`m with you. Dave Needs to wind his neck in, this is global politics, there is no place for sentiment. This area of the world needs dictators to maintain reasonable stability and oil flow. It is as simple as that. Its not nice but its the truth. All we had to do was get our people out (faster).

What do you think the uk would deploy?
Also will Lakenheaths Eagles be used?they my be due to Afghan again soon?

The NFZ will no longer be an issue once Benghazi is taken back by Gadhafi loyalists. He will be back in full control and the bombing by the Libyan Airforce will stop naturally.

The time for a NFZ was 3 weeks ago.

How big is there Airforce?

I think this idea of it just being a No-fly zone is probably a little more than off the mark. If you look at recent statements being given by senior US diplomats the indications are clear that action will (as a necessity), be of a much broader scale. I would draw your attention to item 10: of the draft UN resolution where it indicates states will be able to take "all necessary measures to protect civilians and civilian objects in Libya".

If this is passed in the form seen here then what we are most likely to see is comprehensive operation akin to the opening phases of other recent conflicts. Most likely this will start in earnest and there have been some good indicators over the past few days that this is the case.

The only thing stopping this being passed at the UN now is Russian and Chinese sensitivities, but one would assume that they would not wish to block such a resolution and have the massacre of lots of civilians on their watch. The rhetoric now coming out of Tripoli is no doubt a last ditch affort to try and spread uncertainty at the UN. The facts are, despite what is being spread in the official Libyan press (and often repeated in Western media),Gaddafi`s forces near Behghazi are at the very end of a very long supply chain and very vulnerable to interdiction. Add to this that it took almost a week for Gaddafi`s forces to take some of the smaller "rebel" towns, that he still has pockets of resistance in many other areas, then it would seem his forces are in a very poor position to deal with any outside military intervention and certainly won`t over-run Benghazi in a hurry.

The next few hours will see if the UN has actually found its nuts at last and will actually do something to protect people who, at the very least, deserve to have chance for a different political direction. I know all the arguments regarding it developing into a mire and it might become a radical Islamic state.... blah, blah; but maybe, just maybe, things might go the other way. One things is for sure, these people have no way of determining their own destiny in the present circumstances, nor will they if Gaddafi`s family continue in power. If they choose to have an Islamic state, so be it, if they choose to become a pro-western state, so be it. Personally speaking I think recent events in the Middle East show that young, educated Arabs are pushing for change. The world has changed rapidly in the past decade or so and if the west takes action now perhaps it will benefit. Yes it could get worse, but look what Gaddafi`s example has now led to in Bahrain. It could get much worse if no action is taken.

Just been on the BBC news that if the vote goes the way UK and France want RAF fighter jets could be over Libya as soon as the weekend.UN vote tonight around 10pm.

If there the NFZ is given the go ahead what will the RAF send? Are Typhoons ready to take on the Role or will we be relying on GR4s?
