US navy F18 lost at sea

Post by Ginger750 » Tue Apr 29, 2025 3:58 am

The torygraph reporting the US Navy has admitted to losing an F18 in last few days after it slipped off the Truman into the Red Sea.

It allegedly fell overboard with its tow truck while being manoeuvred on deck when the carrier made a sharp turn to evade an attack by Houthi rebels in the Middle East.

A sailor is said to have sustained a minor injury during the incident.

Deary me !

Poor SOPs … Secretary Hegseth will be prompting Herr Musk from DOGE to email all Tuman sailors asking them what they do all day.

How very very embarrassing and avoidable with someone shouting … BRACE BRACE BRACE ?

Not good, but still not as embarrassing (or expensive) as having an F35B go in the drink due to an engine blank being left in the intake.

Oh I think they're as bad as each other, indicating failed procedures and processes that should have been ironed out well before sailing.

Alas the F-35B loss was deemed to have been down to too few maintenance folks from the squadrons deployed on the ship. Who were clearly under staffed and over worked.... Sort of sums up the Forces now

I remember the amount of stick that VttS got (especially from ex servicemen on places like Pprune) when they left some silica gel bags down the air intakes and destroyed a couple of engines.
"Ground them now!" "they haven't got a clue" etc, etc.

It was all much quieter when our own military wrote off 100 million quid or so of tax payers money by doing something very similar.

Arrestor hook failure they think was the problem?

This was a second VFA-11 FA-18F lost on this deployment.

Perhaps a look back to the late 1980s/early 1990s when Carriers were deployed and compare loss rates....

didnt the Gettysburg freindly fire incident shoot down an f18 also , making 3 since Truman (CVN75) in Red sea
and probably trumps the 35B RAF intake cover mishap

The Gettysburg shot down the other VFA-11 machine, and the one that went overboard was from VFA-136.

Well I look forward to you offering to write a book for Key Publishing on the Hornet/Super Hornet family....

I did while working for them 2001 -2003. A near 30'000 word text and photobook actually may have been great, but I would have preferred to have added more text personally... Happy days working with some great US Navy/Marine Corps and other related folks....
