Well I don't speculate, as I grew up in Immingham in the 70s, and can say I have watched a nice sunny day flip over to thick fog in the Humber estuary in minutes

Speculation or not there is some wild rumours starting out there, heres some facts...

Facts

Thick fog
They hit each other
The tanker was at anchor
The container ship was on a dead straight line. Big ships have auto pilot just like airliners
All shipping has been stopped from going into or leaving the ports of Immingham, Grimsby and Hull, for now.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Foul play, is just rumour out of control at this point, started by Sky News, just after the story broke they have since dropped that particular line.

How do you all think think jet fuel gets to the UK? Tankers dont carry just oil, it was at anchor waiting for the tide to be sufficient to go to Immingham, where they have the correct facilities for offloading. Marine Traffic shows its destination.

The Solong last port of call was Glasgow, some of its cargo is Sodium Cyanide, which is water soluable and used for catching aquarium fish (in some instances). I'll let you all think about that one.

The Torrey Canyon was bombed to ignite the oil to stop the oil slick spreading not really to sink it >>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torrey_Canyon_oil_spill
I suspect the aim will be to recover the stricken ship as if it sinks more oils/ fluids will be released in to the sea

Given its civil its technically not for the board, given its painted in Oil Spill Response colours however as its a mainly military frame I will merge the thread with the thread on the tanker collision. becuase its relevant.

and as an update, I beleiev the C130 is currently still in Arizona so wont make 20:00 tonight for Teesside.

The German registered pollution control Dornier D228 57+04 from Nordholz is currently showing on ADSB as GNY4791 doing circuits around the area.
Also two civil registered AS-355 helicopters in the same area.

Seen it reported that the Stena Immaculate was on contract to US Navy “Sealift Command” and that the aviation fuel on board was destined to be offloaded to an aircraft carrier! Report said that the Immaculate was anchored off of Immingham as a “temporary stop”, before routing further south!

Mmmm, only carrier this side of the Atlantic currently is the Truman, which is in the Red Sea. Not aware of any ARG’s anywhere near us, the Med, or the Middle East either. If that is the case, possible land storage at Souda or Syracuse for the replenishment ships to onload at a future date.

The master of the cargo ship has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of the missing crewman.

Just for the record, Fleet Air Arm Buccaneers tried to ignite the oil but were unsuccessful.

If I remember correctly the Torrey Canyon was loaded with bunkering oil, which has a low(?) ignition point, so would have been difficult to burn. The Stena Immaculate was loaded with jet fuel, which is at the other end of the scale.

Our Buccaneer flew its Torrey Canyon sorties on 28.03.67, which in part prompted my attention and is one of the reasons why I made the OP. Back in spring 2007, on the 50th Anniversary XN964 wore some anniversary markings for a brief period of time.
