NATO Future
Re: NATO Future
Sadly after all these years I think it's inevitable now that the USAF at Lakenheath and Mildenhall will be heading home. To Russia.
Re: NATO Future
It’s not that bad a hobby, yes it’s got sh*tter in recent years if you like BR locos and all that but as my profile pic shows, there’s still a few old timers running!
As for losing LN, it would be a bit of a broadside to the plane hobby. Hard to call it but I think there’s a greater chance of it staying open than closing.

I hope both stay as my daughter works at one and son-in-law the other.
Re: NATO Future
No chance they close it from the US side.
they cant possibly justify closing an airbase then tell counties to up their defence spending because we would have just cause to say "well you aren't so why should we?"
And they offer 50% of the UKs defence network so no chance that parliament will be in a hurry to shut it.

Re: NATO Future
Well I hope not.
Oh and not having a go but you have used "counties" several times but guess you mean "countries". Big difference

Never say “no chance” when Trump is involved. He would sell his wife if the price is right.cat1 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 1:49 pmNo chance they close it from the US side.

Any chance you could action this?

Many thanks

Care to elaborate where the 50 % is?

Re: NATO Future
Trump can do what he wants, nobody is arguing that America spend more on defence. He could easily relocate the 48th to CONUS if he feels it no longer needs to be forward based in Europe.cat1 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 1:49 pmNo chance they close it from the US side.

Re: NATO Future
Does the USAF provide any UK defense on a day to day basis? Certainly all QRA is done by the RAF.cat1 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 1:49 pmNo chance they close it from the US side.

Re: NATO Future
The USAF are not here to defend us per sei. They are here as members of NATO and, were we to be attacked, NATO leaders should call all members to come to our aid - including the USAF. That would of course, be a major conflict and would probably involve others were being attacked at the same time.NorvilleRogers wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 4:41 pmDoes the USAF provide any UK defense on a day to day basis? Re: NATO Future
In history, The tango’d imbecile and unelected South African doos are around for 5 minutes. The same way they have reversed everything the previous regime has done, so will the next. So even if they withdrew from NATo or announced the closing of all European bases, by the time it was time to do it, no doubt the next president will just reverse it. It’s a two horse race, and whatever people think, the democrats will get back in, and no doubt will go about reversing everything the current regime are doing, just for spite, and with absolute glee.

The issue is that four years is a long time especially the speed the world is moving these days. Let's hope for a better future - or just a future!

time for some more frankenjets then....
Re: NATO Future
Shame there’s no one to fly or maintain them, then you need somewhere to base them. All this talk of spending billions to increase and update is fine, but you’re looking at 10 years away before you see the benefits. Unfortunately once you lose capability you really do lose it.
Re: NATO Future
absolutely, and these days, a few billions may get you an avionics service max on a typhoonThunder wrote: ↑Thu Mar 06, 2025 3:18 pmShame there’s no one to fly or maintain them, then you need somewhere to base them.
