NATO Future
NATO Future
Surely this isn't the US pulling out of NATO ?
This BIG announcement tonight is a tad worrying.
Hopefully this isn't bye bye Lakenheath, Mildenhall and Fairford.
The US would still have their own strategic interest regardless of NATO membership?

Re: NATO Future
Congres has to approve..the president is not allowed to do this own hand.
....Trump will pass NATO stays.

Re: NATO Future
Even if the USA did leave NATO (highly unlikely imo), then I doubt they would abandon their bases here in the UK, Trump might make Starmer do some more A**e licking to salve his ego before signing some sort of 'deal'
keeping the 'special relationship' alive

Re: NATO Future
The annual Presidential Address to the US Congress is early tomorrow morning (02.00 GMT), so there you go, all of us followers of US politics will be glued to the box. NATO may well get a mention.
NATO - for the short / medium term I think things will remain as is, the Europeans I hope are stepping up ?? The UK will have to go to 2.5% immediately and Starmer must commit to implementation of 3% by end 2029. Scrap the Foreign Aid budget and close the department is a good start.

Re: NATO Future
Don't bet on it, he is walking all over Congress right now with multiple EOs that they don't seem to be able to stop. He's becoming unstoppable and his views on NATO are well known. We can't trust his word anymore and can't risk sharing intelligence with his close relationship with Putin. The western alliance is dead.

Re: NATO Future
Putin plays Trump like a fiddle. US media has stopped fact checking Trump, no-one in America seems to call him out for all the lies he spouts.
Unfortunately, unlike Trump, Europe will need to deal with Putin long after Trumps term.
NATO will still be there, but will the US be in it?!!

Nothing wrong with a bit of rail rolling stock observation and imaging thereof.

Ukraine in NATO
Dose anyone think that Ukraine would be allowed into NATO?. And if so what would be the implications, if it went ahead?. I guess it would upset Mr. D trump. I also think it would be a majority within europe to let Ukrain in.

From memory any existing member can block an applicant country from joining. In the case of Ukraine I would expect the US, Hungary and likely Slovakia to do so.

Upset Trump, yes maybe. But I think there is a certain Russian chap that would be a lot more upset!airfixpilot wrote: ↑Wed Mar 05, 2025 12:29 pmDose anyone think that Ukraine would be allowed into NATO?. Re: Ukraine in NATO
How many Ukraine/Trump/NATO threads do we need? It's not rocket science to see existing threads and ask the question there!
Re: Ukraine in NATO
As it currently stands I see no place in NATO for Ukraine. The whole reason for the state of affairs today is down to NATO’s rapid expansion East, which has backed a sleeping dog into a corner, when it woke it has not only barked but bit as well. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the break up of the Warsaw Pact those countries should have been made to take on a neutral stance. With the exception of Poland, not one of those countries contribute much to the Alliance but expect everything.
Re: NATO Future
I expect nothing too bad will happen to LN, maybe cutting cost by pulling back a squadron. The future of Mildenhall might be less positive, as its outdated and might need upgrading. And with Musk counting the beans…
