Chinooks at RAF Akrotiri and other overseas locations?

Seen a military aircraft recently but NOT at one of the bases or airfields listed below? Maybe it flew over the top of you today? Need to tie up the serial? Ask in here. Requests less than 6 months old only please.

Chinooks at RAF Akrotiri and other overseas locations?

Post by AlexLee05 » Wed Oct 02, 2024 4:05 pm

https://www.tiktok.com/@itvnews/video/7 ... 7882683441

I have just seen the above video and noticed what appears to be a Chinook HC5 behind the presenter. The presenter seems to imply he is at Akrotiri and the weather and background suggests that as well.

Does anyone know which chinook this may be? I have looked at the RadarBox history of all of the HC5's and done have been tracked outside of the UK or heading to Brize for air transport recently. I'm guessing it may be related to the potential need to evacuate citizens from Lebanon.

Furthermore does anyone if or how many other chinooks are based at Akrotiri, I'm guessing ZK551 and ZK557 could be there as they are 7 sqn aircraft and haven't got any recent Radarbox history

Also does anyone know of any other places RAF chinooks are currently at outside the UK and Akrotiri, I'm guessing NAF El Centro may have a few but given we have 60 ish aircraft total I only seem to see the same 20 or so registration flying around the UK?

Up to three British Chinooks were until recently in Jordan, presumably detached from Cyprus, but I noticed two of these on the tracking sites a month or so ago returning to the UK. There may have been a third, and they may have been replaced. ADSB coverage round here ain't what it used to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4z0erX2QWk another video shows Merlin "E" which is ZJ121, seems strange as supposedly they aren't flying so it must have arrived before the crash of ZJ135 presumably on a ship

I think 3 were recently deployed to Estonia on an exercise but are back now.

There are at least 4 at El Centro. I was there 2 weeks ago, and there were 3 out on the ramp, and one more side on in the hangar. Couldn't read any of them off sadly.
