Silver Jubilee Review of the RAF 1977.(Photo Heavy.)

Post by MikeH » Sat Sep 14, 2024 4:17 pm

Some of the static aircraft at RAF Finningley. Photos taken on the public day, 30th of June 1977. From an age when the RAF had paint colours other than grey:-

Wow! What a post. I've seen quite a few photos in magazines and books about this event and it looked incredible! Just a wee bit too young for my Dad to take me at the time (only 7) but boy I wished I'd gone! Great shots and lots of lovely camo and proper squadron markings. Oh how times have changed! 😟

What a great set, every jet looks pristine. Interesting to see the full serial on the RWR on XT896.

Thanks for sharing these, I never got to this one either. Great shots and plenty of variety and long gone squadrons. The event was also memorable for the Defence Minister falling asleep in his chair, whilst sitting next to the Queen.

Stunning shots, some immaculate looking aircraft, Canadian F104 if I had to pick a favourite.

Cracking set of pics. I wonder if the Queen thought the aircraft were always that clean.

I can remember watching the actual revue in our crew room at Lossie.

Great flashback to a wonderful occasion and fabulous images for that age.

I was 13 then and could have gone but my Dad was too late to get coach seats.

Remember it well even though I was only 13 years old. Unfortunately I never had a 'proper' camera until a couple of years later.
As others have mentioned just look at those cleaned up aircraft and the colours on them - what a difference to our usual 'greys' of today!

Superb post and many thanks for posting  :thumb:

Cheers Paul.

It was a cracking day! The weather played ball and the only flypast that beats this one was the Battle of Britain %0th anniversary one at Abingdon in 1990. Oh how I miss the annual pilgrimage to Finningley for the BoB shows - should have been this weekend. Now, we don't commemorate it. So sad.

Wow! What a great set. As a youngster I only took one roll of Kodachrome as I was more interested in the numbers so it's great to see these superb photos of what I actually saw on the day. Thanks for posting.

Absolutely brilliant post all round, showcasing all the types we have lost over the years at a venue that always produced good shows.

Great set Mike
It was indeed a fantastic event bringing together so much aviation hardware. Spent quite a few days across at the field during the build up, but the sight of all these aircraft on entry as you have outlined was just mind blowing.
Regularly look through my boxes of K25 just haven't gotten around to scanning them. Your scans are superb thanks for posting
