Lakenheath Peace Camp
Lakenheath Peace Camp
Reported on local BBC news that activists from Lakenheath Alliance for Peace will be setting up a peace camp outside the base for 10 days starting next week.

Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
Nothing wrong with a peaceful protest. Not everyone likes Nuclear weapons, however useful they may be in keeping the peace.
Re: To Note if You Intend a Visit Next Week
Each to their own I suppose, but I’ll be giving them short shrift if they try to engage with me.

It's nuclear weapons that have kept us all safe for the last 79 years. I suppose some people need reminding of that.

Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
Everyone has a right to an opinion, don't they? Whether or not I agree with them will be based on my life experiences and other influencing factors. What's germane here, is that I won't try to force my opinion on you, or tell you that you're ignorant/racist/stupid if you hold a different point of view.
The ironic thing is, had we not got reasonably robust defences, including nuclear weapons, we might have a government that would not allow any sort of protests.

Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
Despite what might be seen as a negative post by me earlier, whilst I don't like nuclear weapons [why would anybody?] I of course realise that their presence is necessary to keep peace in this troubled world. If people don't like them, it is their right to protest against them without personal angst from us simply because they have a different opinion to ours. There always has to be an opposing view to most things so some sort of balance in life is maintained, and as long as the protestors behave themselves, then they do no harm.
Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
If radiation can be contained during transport and storage nuclear weapons are as harmless as any other weapon. Activation is when the trouble begins.
RIAT this week, lots of military kit which should be harmless too.

Have fun

They have quite the packed schedule of events. I'm sorely tempted to wander over on Saturday at 3pm and see what I can learn.
Saturday 20th July

12noon – 2:30pm
Mass rally with speakers, entertainment and refreshments.
3pm
Workshop – A Nukewatch Guide to Plane Spotters with Peter Burt
Alas, I'm not making it up.

Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
The link above posted by WinchesterMGF says outside Gate1 (the main gate). My biggest concern is the safety of road users - the A1065 is a very busy road and not everyone drives sensibly and as safely as they should. My daughter and son-in-law both work on base and it seems from the link that all movements in and out of the gate will be noted by the protesters. I hope they will respect drivers' privacy. Will see how things transpire from tomorrow afternoon. I intend avoiding the area if at all possible - unless they leave the viewing area alone.
Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
You should have no expectation of privacy when out in a public place, so there's not much they can do. Perhaps mask up when driving in and out?Nighthawke wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 6:09 pmMy daughter and son-in-law both work on base and it seems from the link that all movements in and out of the gate will be noted by the protesters. Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
Some of the participants used the viewing area and the forest entrance as car parks. One vehicle was then used as a ferry. No idea where that was then parked.

Yes but if they were taking vehicle number plates that's different.Hurn wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 10:17 pmYou should have no expectation of privacy when out in a public place, so there's not much they can do. Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
I agree, if they are taking reg plates then that’s quite possibly illegal under PII regulations. There’s a reason why number plates are blurred on Google Streetview: indirect identification.Nighthawke wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 6:47 amYes but if they were taking vehicle number plates that's different.Hurn wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 10:17 pmYou should have no expectation of privacy when out in a public place, so there's not much they can do. Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
Would you be happy with people noting your every move in and out of your work gate? Possibly occupants as well?
Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
Agreed, irrespective of ones personal views, the whole philosophy of the (current) Western world is freedom of speech and is what countless people have lost their lives over protecting through numerous wars and conflicts. So as long as people are protesting peacefully and without hindrance to others then that right should be protected.raptor9 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 14, 2024 11:44 amDespite what might be seen as a negative post by me earlier, whilst I don't like nuclear weapons [why would anybody?] I of course realise that their presence is necessary to keep peace in this troubled world. I grew up during the cold war and was a teen during the 80's. We lived next to an operational RAF base in Yorkshire in the UK's military heartland one could argue, and very much in a right of centre culture and vibe.I and my friends were (and still are) military supporting. Some also served. We generally did, and still do, see the need for nuclear weapons as means of a deterrence and against unilateral disarmament. We abhorred CND.
As one matures, you tend to have more of an open mid to other peoples point of view and also the need for a society to be able to express and debate. Travelling a lot with work and for pleasure I have in the past 6 months been able to visit Enola Gay in the Udvar-Hazy, Bockscar at Wright Patterson and also visited Hiroshima and the sobering peace museum. These experiences and especially the latter again remind you of the horrors of nuclear warfare and a not untoward aspiration to rid the world of these weapons.
Re: Lakenheath Peace Camp
My Father visited Hiroshima, and was very reluctant to talk about it. I have also seen Bockscar, but missed Enola Gay. At nearly 82, my traveling life is over, but boy, what a ride.!! I appreciate your comments re maturity Regards, John.

Are you happy writing down aircraft serial numbers and call signs? They are moving in and out of their work environment.Nighthawke wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2024 7:16 amWould you be happy with people noting your every move in and out of your work gate? Possibly occupants as well?
