Hi

I viewed the flypast from the Sea Containers building next to Blackfriars Bridge and can confirm all but the Chinooks and the Red Arrows from my own photos (can't make out the serials for those).

Regards

Pete

Thanks for the full list of aircraft involved.
As they split after the flypast I noticed two Mode A plots.
Are these 2 x 2 F35 flights ?

Thanks ZG

Does anyone know which RAF squadrons were involved?

I believe it's:
Chinook - 7
Typhoon - 29
C-17 - 99
Phenom - 45
Texan - 72
Voyager 10 or 101
A400M 24, 30 or 70
Poseidon 42, 120 or 201
Typhoon - 12
Rivet Joint - 51
Typhoon - (Coningsby based)
Hawk T2 - 4 and 25
F35 - 617

I'm trying to find out which of the 10 squadrons out of a total of 15 that took part, participated in D-Day. I know that the phrase "participated in D-Day" is open to interpretation since it could include reconnaissance, meteorological work and attacks before such as from April 1944, and breakout from the beaches afterwards. The end date could be either 25 July for the beginning of Operation Cobra or 30 August for the end of Operation Overlord.

So far i've found that during 1944:
7 flew Lancasters as part of 8 Group, Bomber Command
29 flew Mosquitoes as part of 147 Wing, 85 Group, RAF Second Tactical Air Force (2 TAF)
10 flew Halifaxes as part of 4 Group, Bomber Command
101 flew Lancasters as part of 1 Group, Bomber Command
12 flew Lancasters as part of 1 Group, Bomber Command
51 flew Halifaxes as part of 4 Group, Bomber Command
25 flew Mosquitoes as part of Air Defence of Great Britain (ADGB)
617 flew Lancasters dropping "Window" as part of 5 Group, Bomber Command

It could include:
1 which flew Spitfires as part of 10 Group, ADGB - now Typhoon at Lossiemouth
9 which flew Lancasters as part of 5 Group, Bomber Command - now Typhoon at Lossiemouth
3 which flew Tempests as part of 150 Fighter Wing, 85 Group, 2 TAF - now Typhoon at Coningsby

Hello Comet102,
One of the Battle Honours awarded to individual RAF squadrons for actions during WWII was "Normandy 1944." The criteria for this was;

"For operations supporting the Allied landings in Normandy, the establishment of the lodgement area and the subsequent breakthrough, June to August 1944."

A full list of those squadrons awarded this Battle Honour would answer your question but I couldn't find such a list from a quick online search. From looking at a few individual squadron histories, it includes 3, 4, 101 and 617 squadrons.

Hope that helps and good luck finding a full list which I'm sure is there for someone better at searching than me.

Kind regards,
LH01
