Egyptian Airforce Museum.

Post by burnsy133 » Mon May 06, 2024 12:16 pm

A short business trip to Cairo saw me having an afternoon to myself and the choice of Roof pool for Cairo arrivals, or chance the Museum. A quick check showed that the museum was open from 1100-1600, but as with many things in this wonderful country, if it says it opens at 1100 Hrs, there is every chance it wont be :-) I decided to have a gamble and summoned a UBER. Google maps had indicated a walking time of 30 minutes, but through some areas that are a bit fruity.

After 35 mins in the UBER, I did start to wonder where we were going, but the road systems are as such that it really did take 35 mins to drive, or 30 minutes to walk.

Arriving at the Museum, there was not a soul to be seen and to the untrained eye, it was closed.

After observing for 10 minutes or so it appeared that the entrance being used by uniformed personnel, also had civilians coming through it, so I took the chance. I would say that half of my size 13 shoe was over the line when a young chap appeared from a office shouting in Arabic, noticing how shiny his gun was, I opted to stay exactly where I was :-) he approached and asked what I was doing in Arabic, I offered my apologies that I couldn't speak the lingo and as it is so often whilst abroad, he switched almost perfect English (better than mine !!) and i explained i had come to photograph the aircraft, he was more than happy with this and walked me down to the second entrance, to pay my entry fee, during the 10 minute walk we covered all things Liverpool and Mo Salah, on this occasion i thought better than to explain my allegiance to Manchester United.

I had to pay for two tickets, even though i was on my own, the reason became clear, I had to pay for my guide. At this point they checked my bag, I also had to assure them that i would not use the video on my phone. We set off on the short walk down to the exhibits, we briefly stopped at a small cafe to get some water, my chap then got talking to some base personnel who were also using the cafe, after a 5 minute wait he apologised and advised he would only be a couple more minutes. I took my chance now and advised i would be OK on my own as I know what the aircraft are and what they do. A round of coffees later and he sat happily chatting whist i got on my way around.

During my Visit the following were photographed.

And that was that, most enjoyable couple of hours, the museum shop had some fantastic models, but sadly they were nor for sale ??

The entrance to the Museum was a little bit steep at £0.50 and the taxis are far from cheap, the first 35 minute journey setting me back £1.20 and the return was £0.90, quick tip for you, if you are going to get an UBER, carry some cash, the maximum that you can tip for a journey is EGP 50 or £0.83.

Great place, great locals, just abide by the rules.

That looks a fascinating place! Thanks for sharing your experience; advice like this always is welcome, when visiting more 'interesting' places!
Cheers,

I had a similar experience when I visited, including the Uber getting the dead straight road from the airport, wrong, three times!

Like you, I had to work out where the entrance was, a helpful hand coming out of a window and pointing right.
Inside that door was a small table & chair with security. He asked for my passport. Brainfade meant it was back in the hotel!
He settled for the number on my Amex card!!
Transport arrived and took me the 200yds at most to the museum entrance - 2 tickets, one for the camera. At the cafe, I was asked for ID again. Amex wasn't accepted! After about 5 mins of to & fro I remembered my driving license pic was on my phone!
All was OK
"Sit here, the guide will come in 5 mins when the show starts"..............
30 mins later, a young woman arrived & started to go through her spiel, describing the film etc. I said I was only here for photos, so she likewise went back to her pals & left me to it. There was no sign of any 'show'
My pics are fairly similar so I won't hijack this topic with mine, but they are at https://www.flickr.com/photos/elaref/se ... 052589741/

So, you got ripped off and had to fight the crowds, but great results!

Wonderful shots and hard to pick a favourite, great to see the Tu16, but some of those helicopters are gems. Thanks for sharing these with us.

I visited Cairo twenty years ago. Just about every government building seemed to have a MiG-21 outside it, all very well looked after. In the Citadel there were a few preserved aircraft, from memory yet another MiG-21 and a Su-22, no barriers around them. At the airport there were quite a few Il-62s parked up but I was advised very strongly not to take photos. And yes, the cabs........
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.

Same here, many times, and I remember this museum well. There was also a small museum on the same road (on the left as you head towards the city) with a MiG-21, Su-7/20 and another jet (MiG-17?), together with lots of armour. The other great thing about CAI at that time was the lines of C-130s :).

Cracking post! I was intrigued by the camo' scheme on some of the jets - a shade of purple (plum?), pale lemon and a touch of green! Looks very odd. But lovely photographs.

Fairly sure it was an operational scheme, since I saw Mig-21s at Luxor & Aswan in it. Most gate-guard/museum types that I saw were originally silver, gaining these colours later.

Worth it for the TU-16 and SU-7 alone.
With regard to Egyptian AF camo schemes, I remember having a lot of trouble trying to find colour photos of SU-7s in service when building the 1/72 Kopro kit and went with what the aftermarket decal sheet said. Still unsure of how accurate it is.
