RAF Boeing H-47ER

Post by Ravendriver2008 » Tue Apr 20, 2021 8:55 pm

It’s been agreed albeit 2 billion quid purchase of 14 x Boeing H-47ER for us. H-47ER is similar akin to the Nightstalkers MH-47G.

Interesting. The article says the RAF has 60 Chinooks currently, is that right?

Boeing-Vertol became Boeing Helicopters in 1987, then became Boeing Rotorcraft Systems in 2002.

In theory, six are based at Benson with 28Sq, with all the rest at Odiham. However, at any one time several "Odiham" aircraft will be on ops in Iraq or Mali, and several more will be on conversion to Mk 6A at Boscombe or on maintenance at Fleetlands. Note that the Benson six seem to rotate with Odiham machines very frequently.

Ok thanks. I knew there were some at benson and on detachment. I just wondered how crowded Odiham must be.

I wonder if this will be at the expense of the New Medium Helicopter order?

Not sure there's a permanent need in the Middle East now, given there isn't too much of a UK troop presence there, if at all. There were some deployed to Mali in Africa for a number of years but I'm not sure they are still there.

We seem to have a small presence in a part of Syria - possible the Chinooks in Cyprus support this.
