Woodvale gliding.

Post by TrickyD » Sat Jan 27, 2024 9:58 pm

632 VGS has temporarily moved to RAF Woodvale to operate their Viking gliders on weekends. Spotted today was ZE629 and another was pictured in the hangar but identity unknown.

A friend shared a photo with me that showed ZE626/XQ at Woodvale as well so could be either of these.

43C98F - ZE626
ZE629 was also active yesterday, I believe only these 2 are at Woodvale

There's a NOTAM for the gliding which just says:

121.000 Woodvale Information
119.750 Woodvale Tower

I'd guess 121.000 as being your best bet

I went passed on the train on Saturday and they are operating from the disused runway 16 threshold area with the caravan, gliders and winch all there. Would make a great photo from the path West of the railway line, but sadly I didn't have time.

I dropped into Woodvale yesterday but no gliders were active and just Tutor UAM42 G-BYVI operating.

There is a lot of work being done on the airfield however with grass runways being prepared presumably for the gliders and work to the taxiway to the runway 21 threshold. The notam for works is
AD WIDE WIP.
CONSTRUCTION OF GRASS RUNWAYS PARALLEL TO RWY 21/03, RWY 26/08
AND DISUSED RWY 16/34.
CONSTRUCTION EXTENDS TO FLUSH WITH PAVED RUNWAYS.
RWY 21/03 AND RWY 26/08 REMAIN OPEN AS USUAL.

The Viking gliders are visible on the runway 26 threshold on Google maps satellite view now. Also the grass runways can be seen running parallel to the asphalt runways
