Re: Help for the USAF
Why dont the base use drones to hunt the people down, with latest technology they have, would put a stop to it,max penalty £1000.
Re: Help for the USAF
A problem shared by commercial airports too. There must be a revolutionary solution to the problem, which I have no doubt will be found. Satellites? Drones? Or some sort of preventive eye protection for the pilots?
Re: Help for the USAF
Unfortunately it is a problem encountered all around the UK. Myself and my ATC colleagues are always filling in reports about it when these morons target commercial aircraft too.

Re: Help for the USAF
Where are these lasers sourced from? Where are they imported from? Stop the import and make owning these 'weapons' an offence. The same treatment and legislation as for handguns - with the resultant penalties.

Re: Help for the USAF
I thought the sales of them had been stopped ages ago! Definitely need to clamp down on tbem!
Re: Help for the USAF
Theoretically good, however given that potentially even around Lakenheath, and the immediate vicinity, the area would be many 10's of square miles, not sure a drone would be a suitable vehicle to do this. Even more so I'd assume the lasers are being pointed whist the aircraft are flying over so you'd not want drones in the same airspace.blackbird60 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 27, 2024 8:54 amWhy dont the base use drones to hunt the people down, with latest technology they have, would put a stop to it,max penalty £1000.

Re: Help for the USAF
A few years back, I actually was 'lasered' whilst night driving on a motorway, frightened the cr*p out of me!
There really are some nutcases out there.

Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.
Re: Help for the USAF
Exactly my thoughts.
Sadly lasers can be bought for legitimate reasons eg. Astronomy for aligning startracking mechanisms, for accurately measuring distances when surveying, for using as pointers in conference presentations. Fact of the matter is that while they can be used legitmately, there will always be those who abuse them. Same way you can buy lock picking tools on Amazon in the UK! https://amzn.eu/d/atLu8jN
Re: Help for the USAF
As an enemy may also use them, they should come up with a solution, as terrorist may not take notice of any request not to use them. Plus it may not be appropriate to use cannons on them :-)

Re: Help for the USAF
I bet during conflict pointing a laser at a Typhoon or Eagle would be a death sentence for the Terrorist - they would look up and might catch a glimpse of a 500 pound GBU inbound
Re: Help for the USAF
While out with my Spaniel a few years ago couple young yobs thought it would be funny to kaser her.Didnt see me behind them.taught one of them the error of their ways the other was off.Found out later the second one had the laser and another bloke got him. Both sets of parents reported it and i was asked by one of Taysides finest if I had seen anything. He knew my reply was a porky and walked away.Saved him paperwork. No more lasering for a while at least on Spaniels.roughcutter wrote: ↑Mon Mar 04, 2024 9:47 amA few years back, I actually was 'lasered' whilst night driving on a motorway, frightened the cr*p out of me!There really are some nutcases out there.
Re: Help for the USAF
Should also have said this was when Leuchars flew a lot of night sorties and kids were often seen trying to pick out aircraft.
Re: Help for the USAF
They'd only do it the once though......... Strictly tongue in cheek comment
On a more serious side is the aircraft able to pinpoint the co-ordinates of where it was lased from ?, pass the info to the police to investigate. I know loads of it will be out in parks etc. but maybe build up a pattern ?
Re: Help for the USAF
Like I say, it may not be appropriare to use cannon/missile, as they could be in an unsafe area to engage with weapons. So then what :-)

Re: Help for the USAF
I remember a few years ago Waddington had reports of lazers been shone at aircraft in the dark on approach to Rnwy 20 as it happened a Chinook was on RTB TDY to Waddo, ATC contacted him asked to keep a look out sure enough he was lasered from a dense wooded aria he did a circuit back around was lavered again he hovered above a building in the woods were some youths had run into with his spotlight on until the Police arrived and arrested them, very interesting listening to that on the scanner that night.

I work on the the railway and have experienced this myself, several times. Suddenly your windows are illuminated by a bright green, moving light which you can’t help but to look at as a natural reaction until you realise what is going on. It can be rather startling too.
