Afternoon
Has anyone used a 2x converter for the above lens? If so what are the best options?
Cheers

Re: 2x converter for canon 70-200ml f2.8 EF lens
I have no experience of using a 2xconverter on anything, as virtually every review says that IQ is impacted to a not insignificant degree.
The general consensus will be to use a 1.4x TC and crop accordingly for better results.
Also, a second hand 300f4 wouldn't be a ton more money than a TC.
Good luck in what ever route you go down.

Hi , Yes I would also recommend the 1.4 x option aswell. Better results.

Re: 2x converter for canon 70-200ml f2.8 EF lens
No experience with the 2x converter but I read up a fair bit on them and all reviews seemed to be stating workability issues on some lenses and IQ is vastly affected, so I went for the 1.4 mkiii route and never looked back, I've been using it today on my SH [new to me] Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS II and the results are looking favorable, it stopped it down from f2.8 to f4
Well worth going for the 1.4 mkiii if you can stretch to it, as you'll never get rid of it and it'll be an investment.

Re: 2x converter for canon 70-200ml f2.8 EF lens
I've used every combination of Lens & converters going! Got EF-1.4 TC Mk 1,2 & 3 + EF-2.0 TC Mk 1 & 3. With the camera bodies micro-adjusted to each combination the results were acceptable. With the MkIII Converters the images are even more acceptable. For years my 'go-to Lens Combo' was an EF-300/2.8 Mk2/IS & 1.4 TC on an APS-H (1.3 crop factor) Canon 1D Mk IV with only a 16.1 MP Sensor. You had to shoot big as the Cropping/re-sizing options were limited in comparison the 40-50MP images of today. The whole range of Canon Cameras react differently to the introduction of Converters. Yes, there's the loss of up to 2 stops (Lens dependent) but the 1D Mk IV & Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM retained the main auto-focus whilst losing the 'Focus Area Assist' (9 extra squares around the designated spot!) when a TC. is inserted. Too many combination variables to detail here!
I will be selling multiple items of Canon equipment in the New Year & have 3 x EF-300/2.8 MkII (in un-used Flight cases) + 6 x 1.4/ 2.0 TC Mk1, MkII & Mk III to move on. If our paths cross before then at Fairford, Lakenheath, Mildenhall, Waddo' or Coningsby, you can always try the combinations on your Canon & compare the results. HTH.

Canon 1.4 mkiii can’t beat quality converters, works well on my 70-200 and 100 - 400. Also use the 2x on my 300mm prime all on a full frame, I use them all the time. Need a bright day ideally. They do deliver great results.
Re: 2x converter for canon 70-200ml f2.8 EF lens
C'mon OP. Tell us which route you're going then? If it was me in your position I would sell your EF-70-200 /2.8 ( IS/ MkII??) & go for a Canon EF100-400 MkII & an EF-1.4 TC MkIII giving you the option of an effective 160-640 on your (Assumed?) APS-C 1.6 crop sensor Body? Fine examples of both items second-hand are available at this time at very good prices. Putting a 2x Canon TC on your 70-200 will cause a quick-focusing lens to be slow even when limiting the focus range IMO & will only really be satisfactory in the brightest of light, which is rarely the case in the UK!
(ONLY then if matched to the right Body Spec'?)
Clearly, my further assumption is that your enquiry is for Aviation Photography, being asked on this Forum? You will find this combination is the prominent 'Go-to' set-up for Canon users Worldwide in my experience!
