That's exactly what's the community have been doing since the sellout.

Unfortunately, as it turned out, asdb.fi didn't work out.

There seems little talk of planespotters live which runs alongside to adsb exchange .i.e one providing airframe info the other tracking. How is this different and will it be de-activated.

and yet ADSBx continues to grow - they have the historical data, and currently nothing at all has changed since it was sold

how many "new" replacements have there been so far?

so if we are already feeding ADSB.fi does it now default to feeding airplanes live, or do we need to setup yet another feed?

The community are switching their feeds from adsb.fi to airplanes.live

If you wish to stop feeding adsb.fi, you can run this command on your Pi:

Code: Select all

sudo bash /usr/local/share/adsbfi/uninstall.sh
Instructions on how to feed adsb.live are here... https://github.com/airplanes-live/feed

Otherwise, run these commands:

Code: Select all

sudo bash /usr/local/share/adsbfi/uninstall.sh

#optional /etc/default cleanup
sudo rm -rf /etc/default/adsbfi

#Grab airplanes install - run from /tmp or your favorite dir

wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/airplanes-live/feed/main/install.sh
chmod +x install.sh
sudo ./install.sh

#Web interface
sudo bash /usr/local/share/airplanes/git/install-or-update-interface.sh

#check feed via browser (this is also shown after running the above command)
<your ip>/airplanes/

#Your feed should be active within 5 minutes. You can confirm by running netsat and looking for the airplanes.live IP address 78.46.234.18
#check via netstat if you are connected
netstat -t -n | grep -E '30004|31090|64004'

I just pulled up adsb.fi next to adsb exchange

exchange showing lots more aircraft, was very surprised to see such a noticeable difference

try it for yourself, click the H button in U H T menu to most clearly see the difference:

That's because it takes time to build up a network of feeders.

ADSBx is no longer a community project, and their feeder base has reduced to around 9000. ADSB.fi had built up nearly 2000 in a matter of months.

The more feeders there are, the more low level traffic can be plotted. Ideally, MLAT needs 4 feeders picking up the same aircraft.

airplanes.live is the domain of the new community led project.

Unfortunately many people don't know how to set up a raspberry pi to create a feed. Whichever system it is plane plotter which l would like to feed to or airplanes live . It needs to be a much easier way to set up a feed station if 90 percent of the information needed could be downloaded to an SD card to put in the raspberry pi. With a YouTube step by step guide as to how to do everything. More people would be able to feed these sites not many people can manage to program a raspberry pi or even know how to sh in to one to do it . A step by step video guide would be so much help.

There are a number of videos on youtube, but I've not checked to see if any are complete step by step guides.

There's going to be a bit of a learning curve, but that's all part of the fun! Help and tech support is also available on the airplanes.live discord channel.

At the risk of going off-topic slightly, any feeders thinking of upgrading their RTL-SDR dongle might want to check out this Chinese clone from Shenzhen Sun-Stars Technology ... https://aliexpress.com/item/1005005466363998.html

It has a built-in amplifier and a 1090mhz filter, so can't be used for anything else, but I used one to replace my more expensive blue FlightAware Pro Stick Plus v1.0 dongle a few months ago, and found that reception was improved by approx 10%. No mods, just a straight swap.

Below is a review of the above item, from another user.

When looking for a USB dongle suitable for ADS-B capture, myself and others have had some luck with a particular chinese clone from AliExpress, pictured here. It has a blue aluminium housing and average construction quality. It has the (reasonably common) RTL-2832U + R820T combo, and importantly incorporates a 1090MHz filter on the front end, minimal overvolt protection (good for clumsy handling, not enough to survive lightning). I have seen them claim a 1ppm or a 0.5ppm TCXO. I have seen them claim 30MHz and 60MHz bandwidth on the SAW filter.
They can run hot, it may be worth opening the case and fitting a thermal pad on the underside of the board, to use the case as a heat sink. A 2.5mm thermal pad fits with a little finessing (sliding the pcb in and out of the case wants to destroy the pad, so consider squeezing it a little on application).
Not the greatest product, they are obviously a clone, but they seem to work well enough.
Also, remember that because it has a 1090MHz filter included, it cannot receive 978MHz UAT, airband ACARS, VDL2, or any of the satellite bands. Good for ADS-B and only ADS-B
