Radom 2023

Post by Jason Grant » Tue Sep 19, 2023 11:54 am

Hello, I recently visited Radom air show in Poland and have finally finished editing my pictures. I am sure many of you have read about the issues this year from the huge surge of people trying to get in, to the lack of fluids on base during a very hot, muggy show. I believe the positives from an airshow photography point of view outweighed the negatives and I returned home in the hope of returning in two years time. Here is a selection of some of my photographs, mainly photographed from the "naughty" field due to the location of the sun which makes photography inside the show very challenging.

Inside, static aircraft were almost impossible to photograph due to the close proximity of barriers and people. I did find one or two aircraft that were not impeded but I haven't edited them yet. Due to the high cloud later in the day, some flying shots from inside were possible, especially as the sun is down the runway from mid afternoon onwards.

Did I mention the flares that were used by many of the flying participants?

Fireworks as well.

And the star of the night show for me was the two bomb runs by the Su-22 in the darkness, dropping photo flash flares. Forgive the quality but ISO 12,800 and get what you can was the order of this pass.

The Finnish display hornet (handheld ISO 8,000) was just begging to be photographed as we walked out (we were parked two miles away and I was recovering from a broken foot). We watched the C-130 dump its flares, very spectacular to watch but no pictures.

Day 2 was in the naught field. To be honest, it is the best place to stand and the photographs speak for themselves. I will share a small selection from the flypast parade.

Then on with the flying display. Again, a small selection.

I loved this display, a thunderous flare fest.

Not long left in service with the Swiss for these F-5s, they were amazing and the formation break and flare dump at the end of their display was something else. One of those moments you had to be there (a bit like the very wet Radom 2018 with the Swiss F-5 going supersonic over our heads)

Fabulous! Another country that I am unlikely to visit so thanks for a very fine set of images. Just shows that to get the best flying demo's you need to visit a country where airshows are not so "health and safety" regulated.
