Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo Flypasts 2023

Post by jimsheach » Mon Jul 31, 2023 9:45 am

Hi

Anyone got any insight into flypasts for this years Edinburgh Military Tattoo? The RAF is the lead service this year so surely will do better than last year?

Cheers

So far, just this from the Tattoo FAQs:

Will there be flyovers in 2023?

This year’s lead service is the Royal Air Force, and we are delighted that they have confirmed several flyovers.

The expected flyover dates and times for our 2023 show are as follows:

4 August 2023: 21:30
9 August 2023: 21:30
12 August 2023: 18:15
15 August 2023: 21:30
17 August 2023: 21:30
25 August 2023: 21:30
All scheduled flyovers are subject to change based on operational demands and weather conditions.
So, again, flyovers at the later performances towards the end of the run when the light is fading fast. There are 18:15 performances on Saturdays (5th,12th,19th) & Friday 18th, but only one of those has a Flypast.

Has the show been extended as its usually 2100 and not 2130?
The expected flyover dates and times for our 2023 show are as follows:

4 August 2023: 21:30
9 August 2023: 21:30
12 August 2023: 18:15
15 August 2023: 21:30
17 August 2023: 21:30
25 August 2023: 21:30
All scheduled flyovers are subject to change based on operational demands and weather conditions.
That is kinda pointless as the sun sets around 2114 on the 4th and by 2025 on the 25th. Bad enough with a 2100 flyover, but 2130. Really?

Exactly. The final flypast last year was pretty pointless from an outside observer's/photographer's viewpoint and I'd imagine not all that impressive (visually at least) for those at the Tattoo itself (who admittedly are the only ones the Flypasts are actually for). Not to mention that coming down from Arthur's Seat in the dark is challenging at times!

(The final flypast last year was also 21:30 by the way).

That was the penultimate flypast last year (18th Aug 21:00), the final one was a waste of effort for photographs, way too dark.

Thanks, moving the start time from the traditional 9:00pm is a pain, the Globemaster on the 18th was bad enough https://youtu.be/5OJkqe5e-TY

Gave up on the final flypast of the run as it was extremely dark :-( Fingers crossed for some clear evenings.

Unless they've made a mistake and put 9.30 in error and it's really 9pm I can only imagine that the organisers believe making the start half an hour later helps get the queues in and seated before any of the acts including the flypast start? Could be?

The way the weather is just now I don't think anyone will see anything at all in the air. I feel for the Tattoo performers and spectators.

Any word of what hardware to expect? Got some cracking views last year but missed the last one.

A relative on 6 Sqn mentioned something about a Typhoon 4 shipper on the 4th.

Sadly, unlikely to be the BBMF - they're a bit busy with the Eastbourne airshow from the 17th to 19th, though I suppose they'd be free in the evening. Lengthy round trip however

Have the BBMF ever done a Tattoo flypast?

Good question 109sqn, I can't recall ever seeing them performing at Tattoo Flypast, maybe a little late at night for them?

Thinking of heading to the mound at Crash gate 6 tonight for the flypast. Either that or Lennymuir. I can't see them buzzing Calderwood and the Eastern fringe of West Lothian.
Well that's PLANE to see!

If they ever did, I'd assume they would have to recover to Edinburgh as low light & bad weather would be major factors in them either getting here at that time of night, or actually performing the flypast.
