Midlands air festival 2023

Post by Discodaz » Thu Apr 27, 2023 6:13 am

this is an often overlooked airshow but i feel it deserves recognition. Year on year it gets bigger and better. Well worth a day, or even a weekend out.

take a look at the flying line up, with more to be announced. on top of all this is an incredible amount of hot air balloons. Not my thing but very impressive none the less.

I'm glad you reminded me to take a look at the line-up.... A Draken would be the cherry on any cake, wouldn't it??!

Maybe times are changing - Civil supersonic/swept wing fast jet displays havent been allowed over Land since Shoreham, I think? With only Strikemaster/JP types doing displays.

With this, and the RIAT ME262 it looks like there's a swing.

We just need the Viggen and Draken flying at RIAT...and maybe an F-104.

now that would be good.

the Draken displaying Sunday has made me change my planned day. I can live with missing the typhoon as I will see it at every other uk show this season.

superb update

BBMF Lancaster and Spitfire also missing on the Sunday, and Red Arrows flypast only. Sally B is Sunday only though, for compensation. :)

Can't argue with that, Sunday is the day for me too. I still love the Reds and the BBMF, but the Draken and Sally B are the trump cards here! :thumb:

No information have been said regarding that question. Thou in the past
Coventry as been used for the likes of the Vampire and a few other display items.

Thank you for that, I’d be amazed if it actually turned up. I didn’t know rules had changed & was pretty sure the CAA were adamant that complex aircraft like this could not operate over land.

No rules have changed. The Draken falls into the 'swept wing' category, and therefore it's display cannot include aerobatic manoeuvres. This has been the case ever since Shoreham.

It displayed at Sunderland a few years ago. We'll, tried to. Cut short due to horrendous weather.

I believe it would be allowed to do a modified version of its display, without any aerobatic manoeuvres - although it would be the first over-land display of its kind from the Draken in the UK since Shoreham as far as I’m aware?

Certainly worth a punt to go and see it regardless, in my opinion.

Any more word on where the Draken will be operating from?

Or is Coventry still the best bet?

As far as I’m aware Coventry doesn’t have the required fire cover any more. I know there have been some changes at CVT in the last few years and isn’t the place it used to be.
Still searching for the master shot.
