Just a suggestion (admittedly a little late). Would it be feasible to place Yorknite 22 it's own (temporary) section on the forum, similar to the Fairford GSC bomber deployments or Cobra Warrior? After all it is becoming an annual month long event? It would make life simpler for following the exercise or anyone planning a trip up North?

It would be a good idea for certain, however there seems to be very little interest and/or a lack of radio listeners up that way, there's not been anything posted in heads up since Ex Day 3 and very little posted in the Leeming section. There would probably be more interest if they tracked I think.

It's awful for photo's, unless you're one of the fancied few who can get approved field access. Even then the weather, light, images aren't great. Save your money & do a trip to Meiringen, Payerne & Alpnach!

Admittedly you're not exactly spoiled for choice (unless you're bezzie mates with the local farmer), apart from the official viewing park where a 400mm is needed, the only other option is under the approaches which are some distance from their thresholds. But on the upside, Leeming currently has some interesting residents in place, apart from the Swiss deployment, there are the Qatari Hawks and more recently HHA have moved in. So not to be sniffed at (there's still no chippie unfortunately - but there is a subway ).

i think it would be nice be able to access whatever info is available. i know from last year, it gets very busy up there and i believe its the same this year. so, i guess there is the demand.im not on face book so i personally have struggled this year finding any information on yorknite.

Typical Swiss sortie times are 14:30 , 17:30 and 20:30 and of a 60 to 90 minute duration .
Leeming tower is open 12:00 to 22:00 and the Swiss don't fly at weekends so weekdays such as yesterday sorry , ! , saw Hawks , Hornets and Hunters flying .
Tomorrow Friday 25th is change-over day so the Helvetic ERJ-190 will be in early with a change of crews but I suspect no change to the 10 resident F/A-18's ? Departure day and exercise end is Friday 9 December with the tower closing early so all Hornets probably away by midday ?
Sadly Facebook does win in this situation , probably for ease of posting and especially photographs .

Apparently, the weather looks set to pick up from Tuesday onwards next week (don't shoot the messenger:whistle: ). I was going to venture up there today but bottled out last minute.

Leeming has always been tarnished with the not very good for photography brush but if you have a walk around there’s some really good spots. I actually think the viewing area was a not the best spot!

I was at RAF Leeming for the day on 22nd November and can agree the viewing area is OK, a good set of steps is required to get you above the fence but if they are taking off to the North then you get them on take off about 20 feet above the runway when they appear from behind the control tower.
On landing in that direction they are touched down and on all wheels and slowing down to taxi when they come in to view. I used my 300mm F4 on my Canon R7 (1.6 crop factor) so had a good tight shot as they passed by.

For the last arrivals of the day I headed off down the road and a couple of locals were parked on the left watching over a paddock between 2 farm's as that is a good spot to get them taking off/landing. I didn't take any pictures from there.

I went to the spot south of the airfield and caught a few of the Swiss F18's arriving back. That is a good location, but I'd have been better with my 100 400 on at that spot.

My only gripe about RAF Leeming & this is only a personal opinion is that for some strange reason it always seems to be raining when I go for a visit - strange that?! I’m sure it’s a great base & my bad luck?!?……

looks like the weatherman got it wrong again, I've given up the ghost now . I thought being a month-long deployment there would have been at least a few decent days among the dross, but not to be (heyho), I have to accept the the weather is a lottery at this time of the year. I wish they could hold Yorknite in September or even October for that matter.

I believe that would defeat the object however, I am informed that it's held during wintertime for crews to train and maintain currency because of the military flying restrictions in Switzerland that period due to avalanche risk.
