B-17 Down at Dallas airshow

Post by Gary » Sat Nov 12, 2022 8:29 pm

A seriously disturbing video on Twitter of a B-17 crash at the Dallas Air Show

I’ve removed the link. Reported to be the Texas Raiders B-17 and a P-63

Looks like two aircraft involved, a mid air collision.

God, my heart goes out to those poor souls. One of the worst things I've ever seen.

i don't understand how the thing came apart, the fuselage and both wings two separate complete pieces. i'd've thought the wings would separate.

the P63 sliced right through the fuselage which is why it broke into two parts, its horrific.

The P-63 looked to be going very fast compared to the B-17s speed the impact looks horriffic.

Looks like a loss of situational awareness. Awful and unsurvivable. My thoughts go out to the families.

Talking of 'on-board' it awaits confirmation of minimum crew/min' fatalities on the B-17.
According to a friend of mine, minimum crew on Sally B during displays is 4 persons - pilot, co-pilot and two engineers. The two engineers are required in-case of undercarrage lowering failure, when it takes two 'men' to hand crank down the gear and flaps.

Wolfie,
A few years ago I went inside Sally B at Duxford. The structure is very simple, and, to my eyes a bit flimsy. Stringers with a single layer of skin rivetted to it. With the speed of the P63, plus that of the '17, the Kingcobra would have sliced through the rear fuselage pretty easily. Whatever the cause, and who ever got it wrong, a group of aviators died out there yesterday, and that should be a cause of sadness to all who love these old aircraft.

Quite right, people died and respect for their passing should be all that is required here. The speculation argument always comes up but IMHO is unwarranted af the moment especially casting blame. Dignity please.
