Mildenhall KC-135s

Post by Condor68 » Thu Apr 07, 2022 1:48 pm

Seem to be seeing more KC-135s up here just now and a comment was made recently about less tankers around.Just wondered how many were actually based at Mildenhall

I think there is the same number of based tankers there always has been, in addition there are those transiting and also KC10's on TDY. Additionally as I'm sure you know already they are flying more operations supporting reconnaissance and fighter assets over Poland/Romania and along the Ukrainian border.

multiple KC135s according to the text of the original message so the second S was just signifying more than one and the 6 was a finger slip - we've all done it at sometime

These 15 should currently be based there:
  • T 58-0089
    R 58-0100
    R 58-0125
    T 59-1464
    T 59-1470
    R 59-1475
    R 60-0333 (MPRS)
    T 60-0335
    R 61-0315
    R 62-3540
    R 62-3551 (MPRS)
    R 63-7999
    R 63-8008 (MPRS)
    R 63-8878
    R 63-8887
No clue if all are on base at the moment though.

That's rather rude, we are all guilty of the occasional typo now and then.

By the way, it's Royal New Zealand and not

There were very few based tankers at the Hall at the start of the Ukraine conflict - I think some were at Ramstein & Moron & perhaps Lask?

Apparently most are at back home now.

There have also been TDY KC-10 to support the increase in ops in the European theatre.

There are 15 assigned birds for the 351st & airframes swap in & out of the wing from time to time.

The topic title you created was "Mildenhall KC-136sS". Some people replied to it when that was the title.

Someone kindly changed it so it wasn't utter gibberish, and then every reply after it uses the new title.

Thank you for sharing that. The 351st ARS then has roughly the same number of KC-135s as the 909th ARS in Japan, 16. That makes me think that the "100th's new squadron" may eventually be for something more than supporting more aircraft and more missions.

Forgive my ignorance but what is "MPRS", and also what is the difference between a KC-135R and KC-135T?

Multi-Point Refuelling System - a hose and drogue system to us in Britain!

As for KC-135R vs T, it was due to the mission kit and conversion process from KC-135E and Q (the latter used by SR-71s exclusively) however recently it seems there's no such thing as a KC-135T any more. The following posted recently by "sirius" on the MSF email list
I don't know if they've been officially redesignated as R models or if they're all incorrectly marked, but there are many examples of former KC-135Qs marked as being KC-135Rs.

The following have all been reported in Serial Sightings over the past four-plus years with at least one photo of each showing its data panel:

58-0034, 58-0042, 58-0045, 58-0057, 58-0058, 58-0072, 58-0074, 58-0077, 58-0084, 58-0094, 58-0112, 58-0117, 58-0125, 58-0126, 59-1462, 59-1464, 59-1474, 59-1512, 59-1513, 60-0337, 60-0342, 60-0343, 60-0345, and 60-0346.

All of those are listed as T models in various sources, but one or more photos show them as R models.

I don't know about any other KC-135Ts also being marked as Rs because I haven't seen any photos of their data panel, so the above list could be longer. It's entirely possible that some were incorrectly listed at T models by those sources, but every time I've seen an example quoted as being a KC-135T with a data panel clearly showing KC-135R, I've noted them that way in my lists.

MPRS - Multi Point Refueling System, and the R is a re-engined KC-135E, whereas the T is a re-engined KC-135Q, for detailed descriptions, google, will give you all you need to know.
