The car was seemingly split in 2. Wow. That shows the force of impact, and shouldn't really ever happen.

Russell scrapes through to Q3

Bottas would have wet himself if both Mercs had missed out

People happy to have Saudi petrol in the tank but are squeamish about sporting events in that region.

He'd have done goofed big time if he fails to out qualify Russell this evening.

Also, from a friend, you can fill a Range Rover's tank with diesel for $12 in Saudi 🇸🇦

The survival cell looked to be intact, the engine and gearbox had separated but that is by design.

As Alpha 2 says, the separation of engine and gearbox is by design. Everything after the safety cell [chassis] is simply bolt on, and it really doesn't take much of an impact to cause it to happen. It doesn't actually split in two per se, just breaks the the attachment bolts. A side impact is when this separation is most likely, especially with a heavy accident like this one.
Seen it happen in much lower impact crashes than this one. Anyone who thinks that Lewis has had it as a driver is being a bit naive. He has absolutely nothing to prove, and there was quite obviously a set-up problem with the car. In the GP2 Race, earlier, there were two full safety cars, and 1 virtual safety car. So in a 20 lap race, there were actually only six racing laps!!. Hate street circuits for this reason. People pay to watch a race, not marshals clearing debris!!!.

Unsurprisingly, Schumacher will not race tomorrow, and Haas have made the decision to not run the car at all.

Not long finished watching qualifying and I have to say hats of the Checo for finally getting his 1st pole position I thought Ferrari had it in the bag, Shocked about Lewis not getting out of Q1, Hope Mick Schumacher is OK they said the force of the crash was about 70g so he is a very lucky guy.

Also heard that the drivers have been bullied into racing this weekend as quite a few of them not happy being there in the 1st place but after the attack yesterday they really did not want the race or qualifying to go ahead.

It's surprising what the human body can tolerate. Kenny Brack, at the Texas Motor Speedway on 12 Oct 2003, survived a massive 214 'G'. The highest recorded for a human. He is alive and well recovered from this!!!.

I think there is a big difference in us needing something they supply and us giving them something they want.

However you want to frame it, the Saudi regime is pretty disgusting on many levels.

F1 should not really be there. IMHO.

I personally don't think there is a 'big' difference

I don't have a problem with F1 in Saudi - you don't have to watch plus you can make your feelings known directly to the authorities - and cancel your sky subscription in protest - cash is king as has been mentioned several times and it works both ways and will concentrate their minds.

F1 is a circus and it crops up in all sorts of places.

Hope Bottas has a good race - I like him , someone has to !

Fair enough; think we will respectfully agree to totally disagree - well apart from maybe the Bottas bit!

Shan't be watching it anyhow - pulled the plug on Sky yonks ago and don't miss it one bit.

I also like Bottas, and have formed the opinion that he is a decent person.

I agree, Bottas is a good guy. Unfortunately for him, thats why he'll never make it to the top of F1.

Seb Vettel is a really decent bloke too. Didn't seem to hold him back from winning a few Championships either.

Great race. Another epic Max and Charles battle for the lead and great respect between the two drivers.
