2 x B-52s just overhead Wootton Bassett circa 11.30pm. I assume there is a deployment thread somewhere?

B-52’s up!

Post by GlynH » Mon Feb 14, 2022 2:47 am

Had an alert just over 3 hours ago that Chief11 (61-0039) followed by Chief12 (61-0018) were airborne shadowed by a tanker (forget which one now as I had been waiting for my account to be approved to post) and I was surprised to see them fly SSW instead of East.

The two BUFF’s have taken the long way round over water and have recently passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and are now finally heading East.

I couldn’t post a screenshot from my iPhone to show the route taken.

Looks like this is going to be a long duration mission for the crews.

Hoping for clear skies later today as I can usually watch them fly over my house when recovering to Fairford.

And now I can see 3 KC-135T Stratotankers from Mildenhall flying in tight formation down the East coast of Spain heading towards the vicinity of the BUFF's which are already on the racetrack awaiting their arrival.

I just got out of bed hoping to post a screenshot but didn't see a way to do that from the Mac either without uploading somewhere first and linking to it?

Weird things going on this morning?

Woke up to find;

1. Refreshing the browser window from earlier this morning only to be told my thread does not exist
2. Doing a search it seems that my posts have been moved into this thread
3. Clicking the link in 633's post above tells me; 'You are not authorised to read this forum.' Guessing because I only joined at midnight and this is only my 3rd post?
4. Looking at progress on the BUFF's I see that CHIEF11 was off the coast of Beirut @30 minutes ago with no sign of CHIEF12
5. Taking another look 11 has now disappeared and 12 reappeared off the tip of Cornwall. Seems he made it just past Mallorca and took the most direct route home overland across Spain cutting the corner off leaving 11 to soldier on alone.

I'm now wondering whether 12 went tech during the flight as they usually fly the mission in pairs?

You need to have posted 5 separate times before you can see the relevant sections.
This area of the forum is generally only used for U-2 tracking, and non exercise airfield movements/updates. Anything else would technically be against the rules.

Chief12 does indeed to have had an engine issue.

2 more posts and you’ll have access to that section & the Heads Up section Glyn :thumb:

Posting images on the forum is a bit of a process and is intended for photos rather than screenshots. With the amount of info your providing there’s not much need to add a screenshot too :)

Ah that would explain it then. I suspected it might be something like that.

I did read the Rules and looked through the FAQ before I made my first post as I didn't want to 'out' any secret squirrel info but didn't notice anything. That's not to say it wasn't there only that if it was I didn't notice it! :P

Well one more post after this and I'm in then?

When I worked at RAF Upper Heyford in the 70/80's we used to get B-52's amongst other aircraft visiting and I was lucky enough to get inside the aircraft and take some photos back in the day and my interest in aviation predates that to when my Dad used to take me to airshows at Gaydon as a kid and I first experienced the Vulcan howl so I go back a long way!

I've been onto flight tracking since 2008 and currently feed flight data to RadarBox, FlightRadar24, FlightAware and ADSB Exchange and surprisingly it was only FR24 that was showing the BUFF's location last night/this morning.

Looking forward to contributing more in future as I have only popped in from time to time normally around RIAT time...

Thanks & kind regards,

Well hopefully this will be the one that opens up that side of things for me then!

Always good to illustrate if possible IMHO without overdoing it but just to clarify I would need to upload photos and/or screenshots to a hosting site and include the hyperlink between the img /img square brackets then?

Thanks & kind regards,
