F15C (32TFS) Exchange with 11Sqd Binbrook - Dec 1986

Post by 3Greens » Sun Feb 06, 2022 4:08 pm

As the F15C Eagle draws to a close in front line service with the 493TFS 'Grim Reapers' at Lakenheath, photographs of them are still high on the priority list for many, particularly the jet showing special 45th Anniversary markings 1977 -2022. I did post a few of these some years back but I thought I would share some more of my favourite Eagle shots from just over 35 years ago ! This just puts in perspective how capable these jets have continued to be in the 'front line'

In December 1986 I was pleased to have enjoyed a visit with 11(F) Sdqn. at Binbrook who were operating Lightning F.6 models with a few F.3 on loan. Visiting on an exchange were F15C/D from the 32nd TFS based at Soesterburg in Holland. The Lightnings had just over a year left in service while the visiting F-15C were reasonably fresh from production.
The away team of Lightnings over to Holland were XR725/BA, XS919/BB, XR759/BJ, and XR753/BP while Eagles arriving on 1st December were (C)79-023, 79-027, 79-033 and two seater (D) 79-004. A second F15D 81-065 arrived on the 3rd December during my visit to replace 79-004 which had suffered an engine problem.

The weather was typically grey, very cold and high cross winds had grounded the Lightnings from participating in the afternoon sorties. Thankfully two Chinooks and two Pumas which had been operating from the base during the week were pressed into use as 'targets' for the F15's. As the helos tracked at low level inland toward the Doncaster area they tried to 'lose' themselves in the radar returns of the heavy traffic patterns on the A1 motorway. This was great practice for the F15C APG-70 uprated radar which was comfortably able to confirm kills at various ranges up to 20 miles. It was also interesting to watch the video playbacks on the crew room TV over a coffee of the 2 v 2 air combat engagements with the Lightnings from the morning sortie.... no doubt who the winners were !
Could have done with a higher ASA film as the light deteriorated so its apologies for quality on some and it's a large post... shame no digital then !!

Strangely I never saw the CR Tailcoded F-15 Eagles, it was mainly all BT and IS Eagles before the LN Eagles came on the scene and of course that has more made up for it.

Morning Keith
Yes I remember this deployment and quite a few days twagging school to visit the crash gate to see these! :ninja: Who would have thought then that the rare howl of the Eagle heard then over Grimsby, Cleethorpes and surrounding areas would be such a common thing these days!!
As always fantastic pictures Keith and thank you for sharing them.....you were so lucky to be on base too.

Thanks again

Very nice. The Wolfhounds were regular visitors to Binbrook and I saw their jets a number times. Liking that last one of the stream t/o.

Thanks for all the comments chaps. F15''s have always been a real favourite of everyone.
Would be interesting to know where the two young F15C pilots are now, possibly retired.
With regard to the jets as newer production F15C's arrived into USAFE, and reorganisation took place the 32TFS was stood down.
Some of these jets pictured were transferred to the R.Saudi AF. No. 79-023 became 4202, 79-033 became 4208 and 79-004 became 4223.

Thanks again

Nice to see those Eagles from my old "homebase" Soesterberg abroad! Saw many of those during their C/D period as well as their later A/B MSIP models until drawdown in '94. Someone mentioned the distinctive howl. Although not as distinctive of a proper F-104G howl, it was a trusted soundtrack during the 80'ies and 90'ies over the villages and towns around Soesterberg. Weekdays would see 2 or 4-ships flying along in a slow pace inbound for their approach to the Soesterberg active RWY27 (as was usual with western winds).
